Are backplate dimensions standardized?

The wife & I visited the DGX warehouse yesterday to a purchase wing for her DR Transpac. Based on research I was skeptical that a DGX 30# wing would work with her harness despite being assured it would. The DGX staff were lovely & helpful and despite their confidence they eventually relented & admitted that the cam band slots did not match up and caused the tank stabilizer on the DGX wing to pinch closed as I suspected. We ended up ponying the extra cash for the DR travel wing.

Metal or soft, unfortunately backplates are not universally compatible.

I can confirm that Dive Gear Express, Deep Sea Supply, and Helium Ti (Paragon) are compatible.

Some plates don't have the slots at all. In either case, an angle grinder can sort out the situation

No. The size, shape, and depth of the backplate V are all different between manufacturers.

The depth of the backplate V can make a big difference with the bolt length when you're setting up double sets.

Your buddies might find that they cannot wear your twinsets because the bolts are too short or too long for their BP.

The deeper the “V” or a steep bend, the better the plate is for doubles. The flatter the plate, the better it is for singles.
VDH plates are completely flat, but unfortunately are no longer made. I don’t understand why people continue to make plates with channels when they are intended primarily for single tank use? All it does is moves the tank further away from your back, which is bad for single tanks.

Any 4 1/2"/5" angle grinder. Lay out the slots, drill the end holes and cut the slots with a zip/cutting disc. clean up with a file dremal and some emery cloth.

Started with a Halcyon adventurer 40 and a carbon plate, but wanted steel once I went dry. Bought a DGX steel plate and 30 wing, and wanted to mix and match. Use the DGX steel plate with the Halcyon 40, and the carbon plate with the DGX 30 wing for travel...

Camband slots in the steel plate wouldn't work with the Halcyon wing.... not even close.

I laid the wing on top of the plate, lining up the top camband slot, and marked the location of the bottom slots based off the wing. A trip over to a machinist buddy's place, and all was well.

Just gotta customize/improvise sometimes to get what you want.

Well, I mean, not really, but also I believe the slot will function similarly well at 60 or even 65 mm length if this is a concern. Finagling, as mentioned at some point. I guess if you have a router then go for that. I don't.

Many of these incompatibility issues seem to be tied to the trend to use a backplate and wing without an STA when diving singles. Use an STA and many of these issues go away. Just another option.
