Are there different "models" of Suunto Vyper, or are they all the same? I ask because I've seen two pictures of this computer online and the outside appearance seems a little different betwen the two. One is silver all around with the word "Vyper" on the top, and the other is silver but with something black on top where the word "Vyper " would be. Enlighten me??

As far as I'm aware there are only two versions.

The wrist mounted version and the console mounted version. You want the wrist mounted one.

If you could provide links, we might be able to help more.

here are the pix. maybe the second one just has an extra plastic attached to the wrist strap. Does that mean there is more than one type of wrist strap, but the computer itself is all th same? hmm...

okay, this picture has been changed again to show the difference

...but it's hearsay. I once enquired of an online website if there were any differences between the "Teal" and "Silver" versions of the Vyper they were advertising at the time, and I was told one was an older version, but basically the same. I have no idea if this is true or not, no idea which was the older or newer version, and no idea if there are any algorithm or features differences.

This was a year before the Vytec came out.

You could always email Suunto or SeaQuest and ask.

Were you maybe looking at a Suunto Vytec wireless AI computer? The Vyper and Vytec are the same in size and form, though the buttons are slightly different. When powered on, the Vytec does display different information.

The Cobra AI and a Vyper in the new modular console also have a similar look at first glance.

The Vyper comes with a protective black rubber boot. In the first picture you posted (the one you describe as the 'second picture') the boot is in place. In the other picture, the boot has been removed.

It's a good idea to remove the boot occasionally when you are rinsing the computer, and you need to take it off to change the battery. You can also remove the boot and the strap if you decide you want to put the Vyper into one of Suunto's consoles. It's all very modular :-).

Hope that helps,

Last year Leasure Pro was selling the "old" one for $299. The "new" one was $350. I bought the "new" one at an LDS as part of a package.
Old and new were being sold in consoles. I know the new one can easily be popped out of the console to go into a wrist strap (or if the fxxxxng thing won't sync to the my home computer, because the serial connector is a bit "fussy").
I don't recall what the differences were, and don't know for certain if the older style can be easily removed from the console.
The new computer is the same computer whether purchased in a console, or a wrist mount.
