Liquid

Glad you injoyed the old wreeks. Did you do any measuring and salvage? Or did you just enjoy the sigts? Trying to do drawings from measurements and nad triangulation is almost as inteeresting as the dives them self- especially if it is a previously unknown (or not known in depts (pun not intended)) wreek.

Thanks DetroitDiver for the interesting links. I wonder what a divetrip to Japan would cost?

Damedykker,

I don't know, but everything in Japan is expensive. Looking at the map, the island is very close (relatively)to Taiwan. But I'm not sure if you can get from point A to point B easily.

Someday I'll enquire deeper into this.....

Hi DD

The point is I live i Europe (Denmark) and my travel arrangements might be very different from yours!

Though I wouldn't mind meeting you and other Neptundiver at that interisting dive site. Well you can always dream....

DD-thanks for the links! they seem very good.

Damedyker-I do not do any salvage, I belive in living it there for others to see. I do like to draw those boats, thogh, I am an ameture painter, so I really enjoy it.

Ontario-Thanks for the link, it's really interesting. what did you mean by- "And Liquid, If I can make it down, I be calling. "?
(sorry for my misunderstanding of simple english... )

DD,
Is saw the same discovery program on "Japan's pyriamids". It was truly facinating! I would love to dive that!

And Liquid, good report, I really enjoyed reading about your dive. I would love to be able to dive on some ancient wrecks!

After seeing such great responses, I felt obliged to tell some more.

Ancient wrecks:

Israel's location in the mediteranian sea puts it in a crossroads of ancient trade routes, both by land and by sea. The place here is actualy the connection between the 3 "old" continents- Europe, Asia and Africa.

I remember, when I was young, about 12 years old I went snorkeling a lot. It wasn't rare for me to find ancient relics- Anchors of different styles, from pre-historic ones (square stones with a hole in the upper part) to Napoleonic ones ("Admirality" anchors) and modern ones, "Greek fire", which is actualy a hand grenade of ancient days, Bronze nails and even once I found a medival sword!

most of these dives were just in a beach about half a kilometer from my house, that is not treated as a special archeology site. The ships I tolled about in my first message are located in a place that is a natural port. About 200 years ago Napoleon used it as his get-away point, after being defeated by the arabs. Finding muskets and cannons under-water there is not to rare. There are also the ancient ports of "Ceaseria" (the world's first open water large scale port, I belive) and "Ackers"(Akko in hebrew).

Ancient wrecks are not limited just to the mediteranean sea- In the Kinneret, just near Tiberias, an ancient 3000 years old, fishing boat was found a few years ago. It was coated with special material and taken out of the water for preservasion after a lot of hard work. The place also harbored, 2000 years ago a fleet that foght the romans in the small lake.

Modern wrecks-

I know of one War-world II wreck- An italian mini-sub that carried a detail of frog-man to mine the port of haifa. I belive it was shot by an english air-plane.

There are several ships that were sunk in purpose, to become diving sites. Several former Israely navy missile boats and a tow-boat. There are several merchant wrecks as well, the latest is a turkish ship, that sunk about 2 years ago near the coast of haifa.

What I'd really want to do, and didn't have the oportunity to do yet, is dive in the ocean islands, such as Bikiny or micronesia, and look for those BIG WWII battleships. A friend of mine dived in micronesia and toled me about what he saw there. Amazing.

Liquid,

I used to work for an company that had some R&D at the Wietzmann. So I visited often in my PD days (PD = Pre Diving). Since then, I've changed jobs a couple of times. Last time I was is Tel Aviv was Jan-Feb 92. Very interesting times. Love those Merkavas.

I'd like to return someday, arch diving in the Med and checking out Eliat is high on my list. If I make it back over, I'll be calling you to say shalom and to see if you have time to get wet.

(PS, Your english is getting better. You are doing fine)

Ontario-
Ill be very happy to dive with you.

About eilat-
You didn't hear it from me, but sinai is way better. Eilat is ruined for the most part due to over diving :( .

The meditaranian, while not as colorfull, and having usualy worse diving conditions, holds Tresures of ancient relics.

A good friend of my father is one of our top archeologist, he is the one that took the 2500 years old boat out of Dor to the university.

I visited Israel in my PD dayes as well - though only for a 10 days visit. I would love to dive on all those ancient treasures you just have laving around!

The new wreeks are rather boring in my personal oppinion. I've been to Palau (Mikronesia) and saw one of the WWII wreeks but aborted the dive - it was too boring. I geuss that I just really don't like any kind of firearms.

Anyway I envy you over there  and all those oppotunities. I'll have to console myself on the stoneage finds we do here.

I was digging this site for old posts and found this very interesting one!

Ontario Diver, I took that first course too, here in Portugal! And I'm lokking forward to the next level. By now you should be quite advanced, no? How were the other levels?

But these courses, especialy this first level, are nor only for divers wanting to do something in archaeology but also for the usual divers, to teach them to respect archaeological sites and wat to do if you find one.
