I have not been in the water in several weeks so I took the chance to going along with the shop this last weekend on a few check-out dives at Aquarena Springs.

I was up there helping with a OW check-out and taking a few photos. I finally got a camera housing so I figured I would try taking a few photos. The scienctific class was cancelled for this weekend so there weren't but a few people there. We didn't get in the water until about 130 and the sun was high and the air was warm. I used a hood on the first dive and was great. But on the second dive I tried and got a little chill. So the hood was back on for the third and final dive of the day. When we got out after the 3rd dive the sun was starting set and wind had started to blow a little. So it was out of the wetsuit quick and in dry cloths. I think from not on I will try using a hood anytime I go to the Springs.

A few of our group got together for supper at Joe's Crab shack and then drinks at a bar and grill on the river. Then about a few drinks we went to Cheatam Street Warehouse to have a few more drinks and played pool while we listened to some good music. I turned in a little before mid-night cause I was tired from the long day.

We were not to start until about 1000 so I got to sleep in but I was still up by 600. I had plenty of time to get to the Spring so I decided to get truck gased up so I wouldn't have to stop on the way home.

I get to the Spring about 930 thinking I would be the first person of our group but I was almost the last person to arrive. There was a good breeze so it was little chilly even with the bright sun. So we geared up and into the water. Both students did great with all their skills even with the one girl was a little cold even thou she had two wetsuits and a hooded vest. The water was great and alot of big Bass in the training area and tons of perch. I was told there were even a few turtle but I didn't get to see them. I was happy to get to take several photos.

I look forward to get up there after the first of the year to take the Scientific course so I can dive in the lake. All and all it was a great weekend since I was able to get in the water since it has been 7 weeks.

Here are a few photos, but they are only a few perch, ,bass and divers. Not near as nice as I hope to get offshore but that will still be a few months before that happens. I resize them so they don't take all day to download so good luck.

Looks like fun....great photos!

Very nice,,,thanks for sharing!

Michael,
Great description sir.

When you get ready to do the class put out a feeler or notice- please. :D

I have three people with me included that want to do this class.
The only thing holding us back is timing and doing it with friends would be a lot more fun. It would be great to have a substitute for Lake Travis during the winter months.

Thanks, Andrew

Did you spot any gar? They should be starting to pop up right about now...

Is this fresh water diving? The fish doesn't look like an ocean fish to me.

Yep. This is Spring Lake, located in San Marcos, Texas. Water's crystal clear.

As an aside, I was there last week. The gar are out! I spotted a two-footer. There was also a giant carp head resting on the bottom at Cream 'O Wheat. I would have loved to see that fish when it was alive!

Hey Arch - - I was there Monday and saw your carp - he is now a pile of bones - very clean! I'm wondering if it's a bad time for those guys [water temp?, wrong food?] - I saw two more somnulent farther down the stream. Middle of the day and you could touch them on the bottom! Thre's normally a bunch of gar close to the dock for archaeology, saw 2 or 3 on the same dive.
