Dangerous Brian:
We can meet at the south end of the beach if you want. Have you been to Kata before?
No, I've never been to Thailand. We can meet up if you like, maybe you can recommend a few dive spots.
As it stands I plan to do an all day dive excursion Sunday, including a night dive.

I am not sure about tourist traps in post-tsunami Phuket, but Patong itself was pretty built up last year. Kata was very nice, a lot smaller and more personal.

You can also contact DTW via e-mail and they'll do all the arrangements prior to your arrival, so you don't have to waste a day in Patong trying to get everything done. They are pretty organized over there. Just tell them when you'll be there and what you'd like to see and they'll set it up for you!

I highly recommend Marina Divers in Khao Lak for the Similan / Koh Tachai / Richelieu rock region, and Calypso Divers for the King Cruiser / Koh Doc Mai / Shark point dives. IQ Divers was OK, but they are not the most personable operation we encountered on our trip!

Let us know how your trip goes when you come back!

Looks like the whole world is going to Kata

I'm diving with Sea Bees Kata - they've been extremely nice and helpful in advance - and I've heard only good about them (www.phuket-scuba.com). I'll be on a liveaboard 13th-19th, arranged through Sea Bees Kata. If you're looking for liveaboards, www.thailand-scuba.com is an excellent site

I was on "the Junk" (Liveaboard) at the beginning of March and this is probably the best way to dive Similan Islands - Surin Islands - Koh Bon - Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock !
Don't miss Koh Bon and the Manta rays + night dive in Richelieu !
The office of the boat is in Patong beach and the trip is 5 days - 6 nights , I don't know if you have time but for sure it is far better than going for day trips !!
Because of many places available , they offer 30% discount on dive trip.
This is the right time !! But you can look at their internet site for more infos thejnuk.com
Hope that will help you to organize your trip.

I will be staying in the Kata beach resort from the 15th. http://www.phuket.com/katabeach/
I should be OK for a dive sunday, Where were you thinking of going. I have done the following dives. Anonome reef, king curser, shark point Raya Yai and noi. the island just off the beach in Kata. and some others. The night dive in bungalow bay was so full of plankton the night I ived there it was like diving in soup! At work now as it is 09:30 my time UK. I will keep a lookout for posts through out the day.

Like aquamarin, I have booked my dives through Sea-Bees Kata. The Sunday trip, I believe, will be to Phi Phi island. I am also scheduled for a 3 day liveaboard to the Similans, leaving on Monday. My girlfriend doesn't dive, so I will be looking for a dive buddy. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Dangerous Brian:
\I loved Phuket when I was there and dont realy mind what the weather is like as long as it is warm and the diving is OK.

In the 10 years I've been going to Phuket, I've never been cold, save for standing in front of a freezer at a minimart

I was there this last February, if you go to the Similans it was generally 30+ degrees, sometimes 34. That's C not F. Underwater at 30 meters I measured the water did drop down to 28.

It's hot there - on my Similan liveaboard trip I never wore anything more than shorts, even at 4am I wasn't cold. It was dry enough way out there that I never needed to towel dry, just extend your arms and air dry :07:

Late on this threat, looks like a few of you are coming to my beach area.

If you need a place to meet and hang out, and also do a shore dive, come down to Kata Noi Beach, Sea Fun Divers. The shop is just right on the beach, just 20 meters away from the water... you don't have to do anything with them if you don't want to, but the gang will answer all of your questions and provide you with suggestions.

I'm doing a private trip, if you can join, check it out at:
http://www.scubatuna.com/AprilLVB.htm

23 dives, 6 days / 7 nights covering from Hin Muang to Richelieu.
