I just got done servicing my regs, and I noticed that the O-ring on the venturi of the tx50's is showing through the cutout where the lever sits.

I have 4 tx50's, 3 older ones and one newer one. On all the older ones it shows, on the newer one it doesn't. Upon closer examination, the body is slightly different on the newer model to cover the gap in that area.

I just want to make sure I assembled the 2nd stage correctly, has anyone else noticed the o-rings showing on older tx50's?

thanks.

Hi All,

Depending on the age of the second stage you have a number of "evolutions"

Oldest T30 T40 when looked at from the venturi lever end you can seeonly the outer venturi ring and the inner internal hex blanding plug..........This plug is tight AND NONE ADJUSTABLE

Middle aged regs T40 when looked at in the same direction have a chrome plated ring visible between the venturi ring and the int hex plug..........This plug is adjustable with a hex wrench.

Later regs(and adjustable underwater types)T40, T50D, TX40, TX50 have the chromed ring AND the knurled adjuster

The Latest ATX regs have an adjuster in the middle of the knurled adjuster for fine tuning

The chromed brass tube through the middle of the reg has been modified with time not only in length and shape of end but also the size of the airway.....early ones had a round hole about 1/4" dia later ones have a longer slot ...so don't be surprised that newer apeks regs flow more air all other things being equal.

Hope this sheds some light on your problem

Cheers

PS sorry missed a bit I pressed the wrong button
As far as I'm aware the only way that the outer O-ringon the venturi sleeve would be visible were if the central tube in the reg was not fully tightened up at the heat exchanger/ hose end.

Cheers

If you have the "old type" AND if you adjust the cracking suction by unscrewing the int hex bit in the middle then the venturi sleeve/lever will not be positively located in the box and will be able to move to the left and expose the O-ring. In the limit the plug can completely unscrew and fall out....It will also turn/move when you change the venturi lever position.

All the bodies/boxes/cases have the same part number AP5001
on the old T20 upto the TX 50 (the large 2nd stage models) although Apeks have been guilty of having different bits with the same part number (eg AP2038 the balance chamber that Oxyhacker mentions on his web site re page198 in his book has various lengths end to end)

I'll go back to my cell and get some more sleep

Just realised how sucky my 3yo digital camera is.

Here's a "closeup" of my TX50 - the o-ring is clearly visible, and the TX40 is the same, to a lesser degree. Neither have been serviced since bought, and they were both like this when I got them, and they've never had a problem.

The o-ring might look a bit exagerrated in the picture because of the angle I took the photo at.

Brian,

You crack me up. Thanks again for the excellent "no charge" info.
Seriously, if I needed my kit serviced by someone else, I would send it to you.... or maybe not.

Thanks

That digital photo looks exactly like my reg. I feel better now. I was fiddling with it trying to figure out what I could possibly have done wrong. I think that O-ring was black when I originally got the reg, and I never noticed it. Then I threw in a service kit, with blue O-rings, and I thought "wow, what's that O-ring showing there?!"

Anyway, thanks again for the good info, I really appreciate it, especially Scubaroo who took the time to take a digital pic. of the area.

Uuuuh, Brian, no offense, but it looks like your info is worth about as much as you charged for it.

Dear Braun,

Up yours....Just when I was going to ring Apeks and have a word with the Technical manager.....

Brian

Following a 2nd look at your 1st stage can you answer specifically and carefully the following questions please?
1) can you push the venturi sleeve/lever in towards the centre of the reg (moving it from + to - while you try) ?
2)can you pull the venturi sleeve out any or is it up against the shoulder on the valve body AP2028?
3) remove the box front, diaphragm cover and diaphragm, are the 2 flats on the valve body fully resessed into the "wing bits" on the box and held tightly in position by thespacer and nut or the heat exchanger threaded bit?
4) can you push the whole chromed assembly side to side inside the box?

Following your answers I'll take my reg (which doesn't have the O-rings hanging out) apart and have another look
