Can it be then, that an oxygen clean regulator purchased in the US doesn't fit with a tank valve from EU?

yes that can happen if you got a deco reg from us lets say 300 bar din you need an adaptor from din to M26 the cost 15 pound around 22 to 25$
the photos are m26 male to din female and m26 female to din male
