As a side question from this thread...

We are probably going to Playa del Carmen for our family trip this year. Its a family vacation so I can probably only pull off once, but what would a schedule look like if I take the ferry over for day?

What time would I have to get the ferry in the morning? When would I get back?

It depends on when the dive op you choose leaves and if you do morning dives or afternoon dives. The ferry takes about 45 minutes to cross and a 2 tank trip takes about 4.5 hours. I don't know when the ferries start in the morning, but they run until pretty late at night such that even if you do a night dive, you'll still be able to get back to Playa that night.

Thank you all for your advice.

1. Downtown pick up - I am not sure if that means picked up downtown by the boat or picked up downtown and transported to the boat?

It means either.

3. Later than normal dive departure time: Prefers 9am "on the boat" departure. Which also begs the question for a need to answer #1 above. Getting on the boat at 9am downtown is one thing. Getting shuttled to the caleta and getting on a boat at 9am is another thing.

If I have to meet someone at a shop downtown at 8:30 to get shuttled to caleta for a 9am boat so be it. i just fon't want to have to do it at 7am. People in Maui dive at 5:30 am because the wind picks up and there are no aftennon dives....which is why we almost never dive in Maui although it is a little closer to home than Cozumel.

Also in response to someone else's response about later departures and afternoon dive times I get that. I guess that's why I'm asking here.

A larger consideration over Nx cost difference IMHO is whether or not the op has an analyzer on every boat for you to use or for the DM to use while you witness the FO2 reading.

Most excellent point. I didn't even think about that since most shops that provided me with Nitrox in the past required me to come to the shop pre dive to analys the tanks rather than just pick up the nortox on boat. thaks!
