For PADIl, it's five dives (with certain ones required and others optional) and a pre-dive "knowledge review" for each one.

No written tests. Just talking and diving.

I just did it in Cancun, I had to give the shop the Knowledge Review answers on a sheet of paper for the dives I did, which I guess they keep on file or send in with your paperwork for the cert card. You only do the KR for the 5 dives you are doing for the AOW. Navigation, Deep, and the 3 electives, I did Night, Drift, and Fish ID.

Five dives and $300. Really beneficial. (For PADI that is.)

say what you want, but anytime you learn something new you become a better diver. I really think AOW is meant to be a stepping stone to acheive speciallity certifications and have a couple more supervised dives in your log book. Beside $300 is a deal out here for 5 dives, that averages out to $60 per dive. Just for me to step foot on a boat runs about $135-$150 for a 2 tank dive plus tip for the DM/crew.

Diving as most things in life, you get out what you put in. If you put in the effort you will learn more.

Naui is 2 class sessions, 1 pool, 6 dives past 60 ft/ 99 bucks plus tanks and dives.......mine starts Monday :D

I also just did my AOW in the BVI's. I had to fill in the knowledge review of each dive but they did not collect them. We had a talk on the boat, where we went through all the answers.

I did the deep, navigation and chose Peak performance bouyancy, UW photography and Fish ID. Best dive was at the Rhone wreck. Fantastic!
