The SL4 is a good choice. It is bright enough for clearwater night dives and small enough to be a back-up if you get a bigger one later.
I had two SL4's one leaked but the other is great, nice small size. I have a SL6 as well, which is good (when the batteries are new).

I also have the Halcyon Scout, but that purchase is not for the beginner.

Why not? If I'd bought this type of light up front, I wouldn't have 3 unused dive lights sitting in the cupboard.

If you are not ready or willing to shell out the dollars for a good primary, get yourself a nice little compact light. It will siffice for the basic night dive with your AOW class, can be used on day dives to light up crevasses etc and it can stay with you and be your back up light in the future.

Also, I will echo the above statement: eBay
