Axua:eto dahil fresh pa ako from the IDC and I still think PADI rules (hehehe). The Advance Open Water is no longer called as such it is now Adventures In Diving. The courses in it are designed to give the new diver something to do underwater, it was designed to make diving more fun for new divers.
I agree with Pao its with the instructor not the training agency. The courses in the PADI Adventures in Diving is really more fun than it actually is if the instructor follows the performance requirments of the course. Example when I did my search and recovery class when I took Adventures In Diving all we did was learn to use the compass do the different types of searches and thats it. But if you look at the performance requirements of that specialty theres a lot more like learning to tie a bowline, 2 half stitches and a sheet bend which you will use to rig an object to a lift bag and bring it up to the surface.
If you ask me the best specialty to take after your open water class is the Peak Performance Buoyancy course. Yes you will probably improve your buoyancy after doing 15 or 20 more dives but with the PPB course taught by a good instructor you speed up the process.
You don't need to take all the 5 courses at once when doing the AID course. Take one course at a time and just have the instructor sign the training completion form. This way you are able to take courses as you progress. Here is an example of a training progression in AID.
PPB -> Underwater Navigator -> Deep Dive -> Drift Dive -> Night Dive
Remember PADI Adventures in Diving is not just a certification to progress to rescue its composed of courses that improves your skills and gives you something to do underwater IF taken seriously by the student and taught by a good instructor.
Did I sound like a true PADI Marketing Agent? hahahaha
clgsamson:maybe one should first consider the cost of each "adventure in diving" courses.
Then it was only OW and AOW etc.; now some agency has discovery, scuba diver prior to OW and lately adventures in diving? (PADI?). Matanda na pala ako kung gayun, OW to AOW lang (PADI pa!).
