After much research I have my new Cannon S95. It came as a package with the Cannon Housing. I had ruled out the G12 because I felt the lens tunnel was too long and would create too much shadow in the housing without a strobe.

I have tried my new camera in housing and find the shadow from the lens tunnel is quite significant. My goal was to have a camera that I wouldn't have to use a strobe with. I know it is supposed to get decent results with low light so I will try for some shots with the flash turned off.

Is anyone using one of these systems successfully without a strobe? Any suggestions for settings or solutions?

Does the Iklite housing have the same problem?

I have the ikelite housing. I will be using underwater for the first time tomorrow. Using it top side does not seem to be a problem. You just zoom out 50%. I shoot macro, so this acually helps. The ikelite housing is a much better design. My Canon housing buddies are drooling over my ikelite.

Thanks for your response. I took the housing on a dive without the camera to make sure there were no leaks. I know.. I am paranoid but rather safe than sorry!

I will dive with the camera in housing for the first time tomorrow. What colour is the lens tunnel in the Iklite? There is a black rubber/sponge bit inside the Cannon which will block the flash more than if it was clear.

I think I will bring my old system with me tomorrow too. Lots to learn here.. seems like a lot of camera and options to me.

Thanks a lot going there now!

All I get is the first page and the notice that the site is for sale:(

Thanks a lot checking that one now!

I've used mine on about 5 dives so far. One thing that is critical is shooting in RAW instead of JPEG. I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional to edit WB which is really easy for a novice like me. I have gotten some great photos with no strobe.

That sounds promising. I haven't done any stuff in RAW yet. Unfortunatly things are pretty hectic for us right now so I will have to go through the manual and stuff when I get a bit of time. I normally use Photo shop and open in Raw there. OMG so much to learn and so few brain cells to use
blonde thing

Thanks guys I will try not to drive anyone crazy while I learn!
