The reason I ask is that I have the (much) older non-USM lens and I cannot get the camera (6D) to focus with an INON-165-M67 diopter on the bench. I’ve tried all reasonable distances between the diopter and camera

Before I purchase yet another lens, confirmation that it will work would be “nice”

Yes, I upgraded to a USM EF100 and it will focus through the diopter

How has this combination been working out for you? Is the working distance acceptable?

I haven't had much opportunity to try it. I'm off to Roatan for a couple of weeks, I hope to try it there. I'm doing a trip to Dumaguete (Philippines) in November, I'd like to sort it out before that trip

Thanks, I'd be curious to know what that combination is like to use underwater. I use that lens for most of my topside photography but use the ef-s 60mm macro in my underwater housing. I like having the flip diopter for the smaller stuff, but it is definitely harder to use - especially if there's any current or wave action. Sometimes I find myself wishing for the longer working distance of the 100mm.

I gave up on the Inon 165 with 100mm IS USM on an R5. I switched to the SMC-1. I found the Inon to be difficult to focus and not very sharp. I've had a much better experience with the SMC-1.
