I'm going to Cancun/Cozmel in the second half of June and I'm still searching for the right dive operation. This is my first trip to Cancun and my wifes first dive trip! Does anyone know anything about Scuba Cancun.

Yes, recommended, as are Nautilus, Manta Divers & Solo Buceo.

Have fun.

Thanks Doc! I was also looking at Manta Divers & Solo Buceo.

Would you have a preference between the three?

I did a few dives with them in early January. Their boat and equipment were in much better shape than Solo Buceo (who gave me a tank full of white paste).

Scuba Cancun VERY extensively babysat the divers, even to the point of having divers descend by going out a tag line, the DM!!! emptying out the air of your BC, and then going down a downline to the 40' bottom where another DM was waiting.

As this is your wife's first dive trip, this sort of attention might be useful.

Ugly tank story. Anybody else get a bad one, or did you get more than one?

What did Solo Buceo have to say?

Thanks,

What did Solo Buceo have to say?

I didn't notice it until getting back to the hotel. I removed as much of the white paste as I could by and went down to the Solo Buceo shop at the hotel to get a tank and check it out ----- the SPG would dip a bit when purging, so I popped out the sintered filter and washed it thoroughly. Then it worked ok.

The Solo Buceo branch at the hotel of course said "We've never heard of any such problem before, we'll be sure and notify the main shop".

I do a lot of upside down peeking into cracks and crevices which makes it easier for gunk to enter the valve's snorkel and get to my reg. If I just stayed horizontal this wouldn't have happened! <g>.

In Cancun go with Manta Divers. New owners from Texas, great DMs! Did eight dives with them in May: Cancun, Cozumel, Cenotes and family snorkeling trip. On a long trips (Cenotes, Cozumel) they'll take you for lunch to local restaurants (not taco from ziplock). You pay for your beer. Being only one diver going Cozumel, owner picked me up at hotel, drove to Playa De Carmen, sent DM with me and picked us up after returning to Playa! Cenotes diving was simply amazing! Three divers and DM! Driver was waiting and after dives we went to restaurant at Playa De Carmen. Very good DMs: Maureceo, Carlos, Leif. When diving Cancun' reefs, DM stayed with me after two divers ascented after 20min. It was pre-arranged before dive because one of the divers had really bad air consumption. Good briefings. Good boat. Nice location (next to Fat Tuesday). Five Stars service! Will dive with them next year!

There are 3 dive shops I would use. Scuba Cancun being one of them and my first choice. My original OW instructor worked for another company and now works for Scuba Cancun. I became friends with him over the years and followed him to the new company because I trusted him. He does not pass you just because you paid the course fee. He passes you because you know your stuff. You have to earn it. And if you do not know your stuff he keeps working with you until you do. No free ride. The equipment at Scuba Cancun is in good shape. Never had bad air like mentioned above. If I were to use other companies, I did consider Manta. They are very accommodating and have quality instructors but a bit on the pricey side. The other not mentioned is a private instructor named Daniel. His website is www.personaldiving.com and has good recommendations.
