It's that time of the year I start planing a fall getaway. Not usually as extravagant as I my winter trip. I have dove puerto plata a couple years back and was really let down by the diving. Very strong seas and really was like an underwater desert. Although, had a great time topside. Liked it enough that I would like to try Punta Cana this time. Curious to know if the diving there is any better though. I do still need my diving fix. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The diving in Punta Cana isn't great (the south coast of La Romana has the best diving on the island). Do a search and you will see lots of threads already on Punta Cana diving.

Thanks for the Info. Didn't really anticipate it to be that great. It isn't ever really mentioned as a place of interest for diving.
Trying to find a balance of price and topside adventure and of course diving.

I wouldn't do local diving in Punta Cana, unless you just want some warm-up dives. There is live reef (but plenty of dead reef) and an average amount of critters (not as much as other areas), so it's not a bad dive. However, I'd recommend getting a resort/hotel in Bayahibe and diving from there if you're going to do Dominican Republic. Much better.

But if you aren't set on the DR, you can get relatively cheap package deals for great Mexico dive areas, like Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Cabos, etc. Other countries may offer much better diving than the DR for the same cost.

PS I suggest changing your signature to be grammatically correct. It's hard to make your statement convincing with such glaring errors.

Search for bayahibe that's where the diving is, you don't regret is about 2 hours south of Punta cana in the Caribbean side...

Get the saona island excursion...

Also search for scuba fun...

I had a great time with them...

Thanks for the info noob. As far as my signature "splatterific" if that's what your referencing to. Splatt is a nickname I was given for reasons to which I am not going to give on this site and well, I'm terific. A little combining and hence "SPLATTERIFIC". As far as the odd spelling 2 t's from my name matt and 2 r's just didn't look good. Oh well.

The real deal is when you are diving on the North side of the Dominican Republic (North side includes Puerto Plata, Punto Cana, Sosua, Caberete) you are diving in the Atlantic waters which are much rougher and less wildlife. On the south side of the Dominican Republic (South Side includes Bayahibe, La Romana, Santo Domingo) you are diving in the Carribbean and the water is much nicer and the wildlife is more plentiful. Great resorts on both sides of the island so finding a nice place to stay shouldn't be too difficult. If diving is the key then the south side is alot like Cozumel. The visibility tends to be really good and lots of wildlife so your focus should be on the south side.

Sounds good dos amigos. Dove the north side and u hit the nail on the head. I'll look into the south side. Do they have all inclusives there to? What town should u be looking 4?

Plenty of marked sites. Catalina looks beautiful. Is la romana to far away for diving those sites. Hard to tell by the map. Thanks
