When I bought my first BC I purchased a bunch of soft weights. After traveling and using hard weights the dive opts provided, I realized they were better because they dried faster and didn't get funky. They aren't uncomfortable in my side pockets.
I do however take 2 to 4 one-pound soft weights with me on trips so I can fine tune my weight as needed. I put those in my trim pockets on the back.

My first BCD did not accommodate hard lead nicely and therefore I used soft lead. I did transport it back and forth to/from Bonaire. At the time there were no questions asked. However, I did not know about the Bonaire policy of no soft lead, so thanks NetDoc for mentioning that. Regardless, I now use the hard lead for my BP/W so it does not matter. Oh, and BTW, just as an aside, if ever transporting any lead to Mexico, just know, you can take there in carry on, but you may not bring it home in carry on and therefore it needs to go in checked luggage for your return flights....just an FYI. Overall, asking about transporting soft lead is a good question.

I use 8lbs when diving locally or in the pool, and I generally use soft weights in my bcd, but I need 18lbs in salt water, so I opt for the hard weights when I travel and have never had a problem.

Same wet suit in pool/local/salt? 10 pounds more needed in salt water (with the same gear) implies you weigh more than 300 pounds. Really?

Back after seven years of dormancy....!

Wow...2007....I think this thread must have been floating around in cyberspace and just happen to visit home on a whim as I did not resurrect it. oh well....

Why on earth would anyone carry weights with them when traveling? I've never seen a BCD that "needed" soft weights.

I oftentimes carry two 1lb weights with me for "fine tuning". Many resorts only have 3lb, 4lb or 5lb weights.
