I'm very interested in doing a diving charter in december, 24th to 31st, or 15 to 21st. Ideally from Fort Lauderdale or Miami with no taking airplanes.

This one, http://www.nektoncruises.com/, looks interesting, but I wanted to know if any of y'all had done it. Can you really dive as much as you want from there?

Are the accomodations decent? Private bathrooms in the rooms?

Dove with them a few years ago. Five dives a day are available and you do have a private bath in your room. The food is great and there is plenty of it! I will definitely go back, I've been eyeing their new itinerary but airfare really bites at the moment.

If you don't have any scuba equipment other than fins, mask and snorkel, can you still dive with them? Do they charge extra for that equipment? Can I rent a dive computer for the week? Oh, do you have to always dive with a buddy when you do Nekton? Can a member of the crew dive with you?

Thanks for the info. If I'm credit card debt free by december, this is gonna be my reward.

Yes, you can rent all your dive gear from them.

Yes, you will pay for the rental gear, including a computer.

I believe that they require people to dive in buddy pairs, but you can always dive with a crew member if you prefer. There are often singles on the boats that you can pair with, so it's never a problem if you're traveling solo.

They don't have any departures out of South Florida (or the United States) in December. The Rorqual will be finishing up her annual USCG inspection then heading back to the Caymans, and the Pilot will be in Belize.

We've done the Belize trip on the Pilot and had such a great time we're planning to do the NW Bahamas itinerary next summer, and likely will do all their other trips in the next few years. The boats are extremely easy and comfortable...very well laid out. The rooms are large with Queen sized beds and ensuite with a full size shower. The food is excellent (not gourmet though) and plentiful, and the crew is always excellent. We had the most relaxing vacation we've ever taken, and still got 4 dives a day in. :D I recommend Nekton highly.

They do have equipment to rent, but really don't cater to the rental diver. The quality of what I saw on my last trip was so so. Good enough for those who lost luggage to get by on for a couple of days but ...

Finding a buddy shouldn't be an issue, my last trip was solo and dove with several people. The DM's are also available to dive with. Don't think they allow solo, but do not know for sure.

We're just back from the Cay Sal trip. They don't recommend it, but solo is allowed. I dove solo on the last afternoon as my buddy was finished by then(ear trouble). Since most of the moorings are near/on the divesites, it's easy. There's not really any supervision except they ensure that all divers signed out are back on board b4 they move the boat so you're free to dive how you want. The crew mostly assists you in getting in/out of the water, hands cameras down etc. and fills tanks continuously on the dive deck. With their divedeck design, it's really easy entry, you either GS off the sides - about a 3-4' drop, or walk down the dual stairs and drop into the water.

I only saw a DM in the water twice with a paying customer during the week - except for the shark feed during which all the DM's, the captain, the engineer and everybody are in the water together. The only other led dive was a deep drift dive in which a DM led, a DM followed, and they had the skiff out to collect strays if necessary.

Also a lot of the dives are in shallow water. If you have a full boat of divers, there's generally someone else within visual range since the viz is 2-3 times the depth. You won't have any problems buddying up during the week, at various times we dove 2, 3-with a single diver, 4, and once 8-10.

Note that unless you want to pay the 50% single supplement, they'll have you share a room with someone else if possible. The rooms are bigger than most diveboats, and beds are on platforms so you store collapsible luggage underneath. There's space to hang a few clothes, and 6 small shelves for your other stuff - for both of you. The sink is in the room and there's a separate pushbutton head/shower - great water pressure btw - and more hot water than you can use. Tall ceilings in the rooms also - I'm 6'3 and had no problems.

Really, all you want to bring are shorts/swimsuits, casual shirts etc. I didn't wear my shoes the whole week once onboard. The rooms are pretty humid if you want to keep them cold, you run the a/c on low all the time so your clothes are damp all week - but a few minutes on the sundeck and they're fine. It's a steel boat so there's some condensation issues, the crew will take care of it as soon as you mention it.

Questions?

Thanks for your answers, I appreciate them. It really sounds great, I can't wait for the color brochure they're sending me.

Have done 4 trips with Nekton ...2 in the Bahamas and 2 in Belize. They were all excellent trips. I would highly recommend Nekton.
