Hey guys,

I'm considering a career with diving for the NYPD, does anyone have an idea on the process and what are the requirements to get in?

Need to be an officer with NYPD..once you are an officer can apply when an space is available. Need minimum ow certification . Helps if you have local experience in NY local water and USCG captain license. Must be willing to swim in s$&@, and look for dead things.

Yeah I've been doing scientific work in NY Harbor for 4 years and I'm used to the ****** conditions Lady Liberty has to offer. what does a captains license have to do with diving in the NYPD?

Need to get on the harbor unit first....and to do that its probaly a prerequisyte

Had quite a few students that were NYPD officers that went to SCUBA. I even got to go out on boat 8 out of Brooklyn a few times , aviation as well. As far as I know none of them went thru harbor unit first. As to need of USCG ticket, no need of one, but it definitely helps if you have one if you want to get on unit. Officers I know either had a USCG license before even becoming NYPD or got license thru the job.

I've trained a number of NYPD divers. As previously stated...first become an NYPD officer. Get as much advanced dive training as you can on your own. PSD training from someplace like ERDI would not hurt.
the interview and evaluation process for the NYPD dive team is tough. they are very much an elite unit at one of the top law enforcement agencies in the world.

Would you happen to know the salary of an NYPD Diver? I wanna make sure it's something I can live off of especially in the city

Same as a new hire officer, not a lot of $$$. After a few years you may be lucky to get a specialist detective shield. As I wrote earlier got to get on the job first, do some street time, then apply when open slots occur.

One thing I have read is that the Police Divers will sometimes need to wear a hazardous material protective dry suit. I am imagining all sorts of awful things they might encounter in the lower Hudson.
