This year they didn't give out a first place prize, instead they gave a season pass for all of next year to everyone who enter, $125 value I believe:) That was worth the $10 entry fee.

I had planned to go but had a last minute change of plans this weekend.

How many people entered the contest this year?

How'd your pumpkin turn out?

Rooster,
I was up there and couldn't believe my ears when Jody told me about it. I had to ask for clarification on whether it (the free season pass) applied to everyone or just the best carved pumpkin. I originally told her I wasn't interested but after she informed me of the "prize to those that participated" it took all of a milli-second to change my mind.

Thank goodness they weren't awarding it based on who did the best because mine was far from it. Did you see the one that was carved by the gentleman who carved the totem pole? Pretty impressive handiwork!!

I thanked Mike and Jody afterwards for the more than gracious awards to everyone. Mike indicated that he had a number of problems that day (compressor and otherwise) and instead of turning people away and making some feel upset, he decided to make everyone go home feeling pretty good. A stand-up kind of guy in my book. I have read elsewhere on this board of those that don't "agree" with how Mike runs his operation. I am one that has ALWAYS been impressed with the manner in which he runs his quarry. He is a no bull**** kind of person and if you respect his rules he will give respect. It is because of that, that I tell everyone about his operation as well as being the quarry I frequent the most. He has a loyal diver here...

On another note, I had no idea a pumpkin is as buoyant as it is. Had to drop a 4lb weight in it to keep it from imitating a polaris missile. A few weeks ago I was diving with a group and my old instructor and owner of a local shop showed up and debated me on how buoyant a pumpkin would be after it was carved. (we were discussing the upcoming Halloween season and some of the activities involved) I didn't have any hands-on experience at the time of our "discussion" so I was going off my assumptions. He made it a point (in front of everyone) to tell me how wrong I was. "Once it is open up the water will keep it negative..." he told me. This coming from an instructor and LDS owner responsible for laying a proper foundation of diving knowledge on students. What a moron! I wonder if I could alert the authorities because he is impersonating a "knowledgable dive instructor" and possibly putting students in danger. hmmmm, something to think about.

It wasn't even that big of an issue to me but he made it a big issue.
That reinforced my resolve to never frequent them again...but thats another issue for another day.

I didn't get to go to the one in Gilboa, but my scuba club did do one here in central wisconsin. The air temp was a balmy 42F and the water was 51F. Great weather....

Anyway, this was my first time trying to carve a pumpkin underwater. Definitely interesting! It was a lot tougher than I had imagined getting the darn thing under the water. Luckily I found a concrete block on one of my attempts at sinking the thing, and I wedged my knife into the pumpkin and started beating it on the block. This caused a little bit of air to burp out of the knife hole on every whack and eventually got enough water into it to make it less buoyant so I could start cutting on it.

After about a half hour or so, the pumpkin wasn't the prettiest but it was definitely a lot of fun.

The KY Pirahna Patrol NDI chapter is doing one Saturday at Falling Rock Quarry near Louisville. They say the water is a balmy 64 degrees!

I've never carved a pumpkin underwater but I've tried to sink a carved one for a night dive. Several of us had to use every rock and brick we could find to get those pumpkins down! They're pretty cool when you light them up with a red cyalum stick!

Too much to do this weekend. Wound up doing a short one in Union Lake instead. 10 viz, but few fisherman, boaters, or jet skis. 49F.

I should have though of using a cyalum stick!! I've got a pile of them laying in my closet right now...dangit. That would've been cool.

Ah well...next year.

Thats Dicks pumpkin he is an awesome carver and that totem pole was done by Dick. That totem pole is our clubs, the sign on it says Windsor Skin and Scuba, it was put there last year by our Dive club. Here is a picture of Dicks winning pumpkin from 1999. excellent job considering how hard this is underwater

I'm gonna be completely perverted and childish here...but that guy's name is seriously Dick Wood?

Maybe I'm just overtired.....
