Hi, on our trip to Playa next week we'll have 3 days after my gf finishes her cert to keep diving and was wondering if anyone has been to Mahahual and if they recommend going out there for a day?

I haven’t dove Mahahual but down the road, at the bottom of the peninsula, is Xcalak which has some very nice diving. The XTC dive center is excellent. Distance wise I would plan on an overnight to either. The roads are good but Mahahaul is about 4 hours driving and Xcalak is around 4 ½, from Playa.

Spent 10 days there. The main highlight is going to Chinchorro, but I doubt the conditions are calm enough this time of the year but it might be worth a look. Not cheap but bucket list for sure. Visiting the atoll was amazing. We weren't divers back then but the snorkeling was good. Lots of places to eat but when the cruise ships dock the place comes alive, catch22 however.

There is a zipline...i'd pass. Bacalar is a historic town to the south that's nice to visit.

Thanks for the replies. I guess we'll leave that for another vacation then. Just fly into Chetumal, rent a car and stay at Mahahual or Xcalak for a few days. For this trip we'll stick with PdC and Cozumel

My son and I spent a week three as a graduation present. We use Jorge with bucaneros del caribe, Great guy and with a nice little dive shop right on the beach. Mahahual is a great out of the way dive spot. We dive there on cruises every year to boot. Like Mikey said, when the cruise ships aren't in town, you have the entire beach to yourselves.

We rented a nice little apartment above the money exchange shop from an American named Richard.

Don't miss the Travel'In a few clicks down the beach "road". Great food and good times.

galvanf, if you're looking for something fun to do close to PdC and Coz, take a look at Isla Mujeres. It's a little more off the beaten path and can be done in a day trip if necessary. You'll probably be a little early, but during the summer, you can snorkel with whalesharks near there.

The house/island make out of recycled water bottles is worth a visit if you make it there. Pay the 50 pesos to do the tour. Even if it's self-guided, it's worth the time & money.

Dove there with my son last week when our cruise ship docked. DreamTime Dive Resort took us out for an excellent shallow reef dive. Cool trenches and plentiful sea life. Cute little town with lots of restaurants, uncrowded and very friendly and outgoing people.
