Hi Dave,
My husband and I have been to Roatan. We stayed at Anthony's Key Resort and I can't say enough about them. We stayed there in 1999 so I am sure that they have made a lot of changes in 9 years. We stayed in a room out on their Key which is a small island that is just across a lagoon from the rest of the resort. The rooms were like log cabins on stilts with ceiling fans for cooling. We went the summer after Hurricane Mitch and I know that they had to replace some of the rooms and some of the them have A/C. The rooms are not fancy. Ours did not have a TV, A/C, or even a radio. They had a porch area as well. The stay was "All inclusive" and the food was plentiful and very tasty. The service at this resort is second to none. We flew Continental to the Honduran mainland and then took Islena Air to Roatan. I believe that there are direct flights now. The biggest problem that we had was our luggage was lost for 5 days. I don't know if it was Continental or Islena but lost luggage was a major problem in visiting Roatan. Anthony's Key, however truly made the most out of a crappy situation. How, you say....well instead of you having to worry and travel back and forth to the airport to try to find your luggage, they allowed you to enjoy your trip and they met every plane that came to the island to look for their guest's luggage!!!! That may not sound like much but they took some of the "sting" out of the incident. The other thing that they did was gave you whatever equipment you needed to dive free of charge. Yes I did say free of charge. Other places would rent you equipment which adds up day after day. When my luggage finally arrived, I had a free flow issue with my regulator. I asked them if they had any suggestions. One of their divemasters, took my regulator home with him and fixed it free of charge. I almost fell over when I asked what it cost and he said nothing. The diving was very good. The divemasters and boats were very nice and there were many sites close to the resort. The other great thing is that they had Dolphins on their property. They had shows and opportunities to both swim and dive with the dolphins (of course for an additional fee). They also had a museum on their property which is interesting. I can't tell you much about Roatan other than Anthony's as my husband had a really bad cold and basically crawled out of bed to dive and then went back to bed. We did 3 dives a day. You could use/rent? kayaks and there was horseback riding nearby. They had a big outdoor BBQ on the Key with the Garifuna showing us their songs and dances. Just about everyone spoke English and well there. There was a recompression chamber right on the property and we were fortunate to get some cold medicine from the Dr. on call there. I think that you would really enjoy yourself there and I am certain that the luggage issues are much better now. Well worth the trip.
