Hello everyone and Happy New Year to all.

I am loving the Florida weather down here and have finally gotten settled in.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for part time work?

I have extensive experience in the diving industry but am only really looking for something part time.

I know there are many dive shops in this area but don't really know which ones are the best and busiest. Or, which ones to stay away from

So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What dive shops and whom to contact or send a resume to.

Thanks again and Happy New Year

In the Sarasota area I have had good experiences with the staff at SeaTrek Divers. They are a little "mom and pop" type of operation so I dont know if they would be hiring or not, but they were very helpful and friendly!
Good Luck!

Area dive pros are hurting right now. Full time instructors are really struggling. If you are just looking to do something PT because you love it, you will be fine. But, if you have income expectations, you may end up dissapointed for the foreseeable future. I know of at least 2 shops that have recently laid off instructors and I am guessing there are more. I know one instructor who was recently laid off and can't find a job anywhere else (not sure how hard he is looking) and another instructor who is looking for PT work outside of SCUBA to supplement his income.

Yes, I've heard that the industry is struggling quite a bit (except the cave instructors) this last year.

I am only looking for some part time work because I love it. I have another revenue stream coming in from the blogs that I manage and my t shirt shop but, I still have a lot of time on my hands and would like to work.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions so far everyone

I do some part time work for some shops north of Tampa, I can tell you they and their nearby competitors are not dieing, but certainly hurting. Getting active in the community and doing some independant work may be your best bet.

I have to agree with Dive Bandit. I also do some work for a couple local shops and DM for the aquarium. There isn't much in the way of work out there. I would suggest you find a local shop or two that you really like and start diving with them. As you get to know each other when the opportunities come up you will be able to take them.
The dive community around here is pretty small. Everyone seems to know each other in some way so just being around and diving will go a long way toward getting your foot in the door.
Being that you are in Sarasota I would suggest getting in touch with Scuba Quest down there. They are a pretty big outfit with several shops across the state. They might be able to use you as a DM.

I did check scuba quests web site and it seems to be down. I remember checking it a few months ago and it was up and had a section to upload a resume but, it's not there anymore.

I'm going to start visiting stores next week to start meeting people.

Thank again

They are updating the site right now. It will be up soon. Your best bet is to just hit the stores like you plan to. You might want to check with Mote Marine down there to see if they have anything. They might be able to put you on the right path anyway. There are also some boat cleaning outfits down there that might be looking to put on part time help.
