Well you are definitely right in that PADI Instructor and combat diver are nothing alike... The Navy did this as a SEPERATE certification for the seals that has nothing to do with their mission... it just allows them to come away with a professional certification that is useful when they get out of the military..

Now something that I just thought about... it MAY only be the SEAL dive motivators/instructors that are offered this... I dont think EVERY SEAL gets this oppertunity... I will ask the instructor at the scuba.com store next time I go.... I wish I could give more information, but seeing that im not a SEAL, ya know.. haha

Stryker, are you saying that people on the board won't say they are SEALs? Or are you saying the guy I work with isn't a Navy SEAL? I hope it's the former.

Let's hope your friend really is a Seal. The special warfare commmunity of all branches takes a very dim view of imposters.

If your friend talks alot about being a SEAL, and brags about his exploits then in all likely hood he is an imposter. As Gary D. said Special Ops guys do not brag about exploits.

If your friend fits the above description you can have him checked out at this site.

http://www.authentiseal.org/index.htm

Also here is another site to check out about imposters.

http://www.nightscribe.com/Military/SEALs/wannabe_seals.htm

There are also similiar groups that check up on Green Beret imposters also. Just do a search on the net.

well the older guys talk about it more openly than the newer breed of SEALs so I would tend to believe him... KidK9 says he was in the Vietnam Era, so they were still a fairly new operation.... I dont think he was "Bragging" about being a SEAL.... Anyone who knows one knows they will never brag about the job.... Its a big enough honor just being one and being noticed when they wear the Budweiser warfare pin without having to rub people's faces in it...

Ok, listen, I know he's not an imposter, so please don't call me a liar. My initial question was if there were other SEALs on this board. The guy I work with does not brag, does not do anything boasting of any sort, but he works with my family and my father has known him since he got back from Vietnam. They went to school together. He's the real deal. Frogman tattoo and all (and no I'm not saying that MAKES a SEAL so dont go there either). I was just asking if other SEALs now or past frequent the rec boards.

I haven't seen anyone here call you a liar. Asking questions, or making statements isn't calling anyone a liar.

If you took my post as implying you were a liar or your friend is a liar I apologise.

Your above description of your friend makes it more likely he's telling the truth then not.

Thanks for the clarification DiverG. I didnt mean that you directly called me a liar, I just meant I hope that wasnt what you were implying. Which isn't, so we're good. I didn't really want this thread to turn into "is the guy I know a SEAL or not". I know he is, plain and simple. 2 Purple hearts and the whole bit...

Cool kidk9.

If your intersted though you should still check out some of the links I posted.
It makes for some good readings about imposters, and how the Seals and other Special Ops people feel about imposters. They will harass an imposter including public humiliation if they do not cease claiming to be a Seal.

Hey all, just wondering if any Navy SEALs frequent the site and if you dive recreatoinally. I work with a Navy SEAL from the Vietnam Wa rand he doesn't rec dive anymore. I was just wondering if anyone else gave up diving after service.

Thanks to all who have served our country. You are my hero. I respect you beyond what words will allow.

As a former SEAL, I still like to dive. Although, almost all my dives are recreational. The only time there not is when I am helping out as a divemaster.

I graduated with BUD/S Class 160, in 89. I was stationed with SEAL Team 8, Until I got out in 94.

As for the instructor cert...I have never heard of that being offered. When I went through BUD/S, the diving phase, was the third phase of training. It was 9 weeks long, and we were only offered Padi Basic Open Water certification. The only reason we were offered that, was because one of our instructors, just happened to be a Padi instructor.

One of my closest friends, actually runs 2nd Phase. I will give him a call and will post his answer.

To answer your question, probably yes. Would they knowingly come out and tell you, No (especially if they are on an active team, OPSEC).
