I was out diving off of Green Bridge in Newport this weekend and had a really great dive. I have been thinking about the best way to dive the arches off of Gooseberry Island, to go from Green Bridge would require a one mile swim to get to out and back. While I don't mind being in the water for the right dive, that is getting a little prohibitively far....

What did occur to me was that it is an easy kayak paddle to Gooseberry from Green Bridge. My thought was to kayak out to the island and beach it on protected side of the island. From what I can see, the south western side of the island has a gravel beach that would be more than adequate for beach diving out to the arches. From the areal photos I can see that there is a house on the island. My question is: would beaching a kayak and shore diving from this spot be viable. I know RI has fairly liberal public access laws, but I don't want to surface and find that my kayak has been impounded or I am getting a $500 ticket for trespassing. I haven't ever tried Kayak diving and doubt that the gear I have would lend itself to that, but I do have a tandem kayak that could easily transport me and my gear out there.

Any thoughts?

I have not been there for a few years, but this is what I used to do..park car/truck by green bridge and launch zodiac from there or from kings beach..once on site just anchor kayak just over by the arch and make your dive. be sure to have a dive flag on it.

Dont' know the answer to your question but did see a dive boat out of Jamestown that takes divers to that site.
