The gulf is probably blown out for a while due to the storms and a half hour drive won't even get you out of Pinellas county so the springs are out of the question. I think you are SOL for this time.

Thanks for the reply - do you know what the best option would be in closest proximity to Indian Shores - how far would I have to drive? I'm on vacation with my wife and daughter at my mother in laws in North Reddington Shores and am really wanting to dive so I'm discovering I may have to drive a bit if I really want to dive. Thanks for any help. I live in the Louisville KY area so its not too often I get these opportunities. Thanks again.

I think this would depend on your certification/comfort level. Hudson Grotto ( Florida Cave, Cavern, and Sinkhole Diving ) is the closest but deep and very dark (tannic) but the better springs are at least 2 to 3 hours north. Again, the gulf is out due to the storms but maybe the east coast?

Hate to say it, man, but if you want to dive on this vacation you are going to have to add a road trip to your itinerary. EAN provided a great description of Hudson Grotto. It's actually a great dive if you are OK with the dark water but if your new to that it may not be that enjoyable for you. If you haven't done it yet, Weeki Wachee is a cool dive, but it's one of those "one time dives". But, if your wife or daughter don't dive, this is one they could enjoy with you. They can actually sit in the underwater theather and watch you dive. There is also a small water park and some other activities as well. I was up at Blue Grotto and Devil's Den today and they were both amazingly awesome dives so that may be an option for you as well.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I've booked with Adventure Diving in Crystal River and the options are Kings Bay, Rainbow River, Blue Grotto/Devils Den. They told me BG/DD we'd have to drive about 40 miles for those, but going to decide in the AM - I'm going up tonight. Feel free to chime in with any suggestions. I'm a novice - less than 10 logged dives, just started on my advanced. Thanks again.

Do BG and DD. They are good sites to give you a feel for the Florida spring diving ad they can count toward your advanced if you are with an instructor. You being fom ou of town you will really enjoy those site. Its something you don't get to see everyday unless you live here anyway.
