I'm fairly new to diving and bought the Black Diamond upon a friends recommendation and after testing in a pool. I have 19 warm, saltwater dives in it and love it. Fits me well, doesn't move around, good adjustments, good weight system, swims flat when properly weight balanced, plenty of pockets (if I need 'em). It's probably more BC than I need for warm water diving and I would have gone with the Balance (a little lighter & easier to pack) but the shop had the B.D. on sale at such a price I couldn't pass it up. No regrets. I figure it will last me a longggg time.

I went with the AirSource alternate air source & inflator. I'm still not convinced it is better than a seperate octo & inflator. It works fine and breaths fine (I use some every time I go out so I am comfortable with it). I just question whether, in an emergency situation, my buddy & I would be better off with a standard backup or octo. It is nice not having the extra hose hanging around. It's your choice.

love my black diamond...great bc..very comfortable, loads of lift, nothing bad to say about it

Its a good, comfortable BC. Pretty stable, though the big bladder can roll you over if you have too much weight. Too bulky for travelling, though I have flown with it. If you don't need all of the bouyancy and wear less than 10 kilos of weight, I would suggest the Balance. I have about 150 dives in the Black Diamond. Warm and Cold Water, shore and boat dives.

I like mine, but don't know as it's something necessary for everyone. Seeing as I'm a short but rather, shall we say, large woman, it was difficult for me to find a bc that had enough lift for me in a thick wetsuit or even drysuit that fit around my chest and waist, without being too long. The Black Diamond was the only one that I tried (and I tried a bunch of them) that actually fit me. It was amazing diving with it for the first time, and not having the bc slide up and shift around - what a difference it made!
So, while I love mine and wouldn't want to try to dive with anything different (although what I've heard about a bp/w sounds like that's adjustable enough to work, too) if you don't need all of that lift or the adjustability, then go with the balance. It's easier to travel with, and a nice bc on its own.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Think i'll go for it. Seems like a tough study choie that's gonna last me a long long time.
