yeah.. the problem I had with them is that they were constantly unscrwewing, and I almost lost one. I tried both, from diver's side and the other side, made no difference.

How could you almost loose one when are threaded onto the belt? Unless this was when you took the harness off? Just wondering as I have yet to use mine.

I have the tab on the tank side of the backplate. The grommets are showing some wear around the webbing. I used a quarter as a screwdriver and cinched the hell out of them, and they've stayed tight since day one.

Yeah, I meant when the harness was off... one side was open, and it completely slid out and fell on the floor...

I normally dive at home I use a steel 95 and about 16lbs of weight on the belt. I am going to FL on vacation and I figured that I will probably end up with AL 80's on most of the boats requiring me to use more like 20lbs..

I have been thinking about the weighted STA which will take about 6 lbs of of my belt, but I still have a need for the ditchable weight. I really do not like wearing a belt in addition to the harness, I just do not find it comfortable, so I wanted to try the ACB system.

I also am a big guy and I am hoping that the ACB pockets will not seem that big, just to give you an idea of size, with the 12 feet of webbing on the harness I have not cut any off, although I probably could remove about 1 foot.

Thanks again

Nope - lead shot is nowhere near as dense as a solid weight. The pouches are rated by the largest single solid weight they will accept - I can't fit 2 x 5lb solids into the 10lb, but can fit a single 10lb solid hip weight. Even with solid weights it's going to depend on the shape - you might be able to find 2 x 5lbs that fit.

They're at almost bursting point with 7lb of soft weight jammed in them, and the buckles are almost impossible to close. Luckily I only need 5lb per side, so it's not much of an issue for me, unless I get stuck diving an AL tank somewhere.

just to add to this. I can't say for sure about the density of the lead shot but I can put 4 2.5# bullets in a pouch and they fit tightly but they still fit. They're coated too so I don't think you'll have a problem

I have the 6lb Koplin STA, and considering ditching it on ebay as well. INstead, I may just stack two SS backplates togather instead,... but I am moving to doubles soon anyway, so I won't need for a STA all togather.

Why not pour a channel weight for your extra ballast?

Just to clarify, when I said "density", I meant that lead shot is basically balls of lead with airspaces between them - whereas a solid lead weight obviously has no airspaces. 5lb of lead shot takes up more volume than a solid 5lb weight.

Coming from a weight integrated BC, they made sense. I haven't worn a weight belt since my OW cert dives.

I started out with an 8# in each... I'm down to 4# in each. My problem is a 4# plate is too SMALL for the ACB. The pockets were consistently (at least once per trip) falling out of the ACB and left hanging by the buckle, flapping in the breeze (current.)

I went to Shot weights, as they are simply "larger"... and they haven't fallen out in the last two trips since the change.

My can light was a problem... Then I did the Scubaroo mod and all is good there (great tip, Ben). On the other side, the issue is this: With so little mass in the left pocket, the webbing is cinched down so far that the excess webbing interferes with the Dring. I am fighting to re-clip my SPG. I'm about to cut down the webbing and re-sew the foldover. Of course, there goes some of the resale value...

But with only 8 pounds, I'm thinking of moving to the FredT plate and getting an STA... I dunno. When I got the things, ditchable weight was very much on my mind, and with 16# there was a lot more to ditch. Diving a drysuit with my Steel 130, I'm thinking of losing these things....

Is ditchable weight really THAT important when there's not so much to ditch?

Confused in Cal
