I currently have a trip to Tahiti booked and will be going to Morea, then Bora Bora, then Rangiroa. I am a very new diver with about six dives since certification. Based on some of the posts I have seen its seems Rangiroa is very challenging (dive at the passes with strong currents.) Are there any dives in Rangiroa more appropriate for a beginner (perhaps something closer in in the lagoon)?

there are...

aquarium is a good easy dive with lots of fish.

also out on the reef to the right side (as you are going out) of Tiputa pass is a great dive with lots of turtles, dolphins, etc

Going out of avatoru pass on the right is also a good dive with silvertip sharks....

actually the pass dives are usually not that challenging, the dms will not take you deep as you are a new diver, you just jump in the blue and drift straight on through...

I agree with Mike. My wife and I dove there this past June and loved it. The current is ripping through Tiputa pass but just float along and enjoy it. Like Mike mentioned, you can also stay outside the pass at both Tiputa and Avatoru.

Have a great trip!

We just got back from 1 week in Rangiroa and 1 in Bora Bora... It was kinda stormy the week we were there so that made in and out of the zodiak a bit more challenging. We didn't even dive Avarotu pass since the dm said the vis would be even worse than tiputa!
So that's part 1 - zodiak diving can be a tad more difficult. The diving was mostly very challenging. We hit some currents out of nowhere that had us hanging onto the reef barely able to keep the reg in our mouths! But as Mike said there are some areas
that are manageable. The reef just outside of tiputa pass is fantastic! So just make sure the dm knows your skill level and comfort level up front! Our last dive of the week was us and one other couple. Somehow the dm did not get the msg until right before the dive that they had not dove in over 1 year and were looking for a reorientation dive! Left the dm with a difficult task, but he did a great job!
