Some sharks may be genetically predisposed to poorly integrate or otherwise ignore certain patterns the folks at the Australian firm Shark Attack Mitigation Systems (SAMS) have concluded. SAMS is a collaborative effort between University of Western Australia shark researchers, Professors Shaun Collin and Nathan Hart among others. How does it work? This is some of what they have to say about that on their website:

"Many years of anecdotal evidence suggests that a stripe pattern acts as a deterrent or repellent to sharks - but we now know there’s more to the story.

SAMS has applied scientific principles to this theory to discover that very specific contrasting, colours, shapes and dimensions work together for maximum effect. If you look closely, the stripes contain intricate detailing."

You will have thousands of venomous sea snakes trying to mate with you in the striped outfit. Once back on shore the cops will point their guns at you, assuming you've broken out of prison. Sharks will stay away though.

So a baloney sandwich on white bread, forcible sodomy, AND high taxes. California just keeps sounding better and better.

Yeeaah ... I'm not gonna put any stock in this. For one thing, a lot of shark attack cases - especially on surfers and other surface-swimming targets - are made on silhouettes. I don't care what kind of stripey suit you're wearing; if you're a solid object against a sunlit surface you'll show up as a dark shape that may or may not prompt toothy investigation.

On the plus side, the blue one looks good for spearfishing cammies.

What a great idea from a sales perspective. I mean, given the rarity of shark attacks the chance of someone wearing one of these actually getting bitten? After a few years they'll be able to say "In x years of operation, nobody has ever been bitten wearing one of our getups."

Of course it could actually be working, we'll never know. Unless someone gets bit with one of these on.

We lead the world in shark attacks in Florida, hands down. We aren't even close in terms of fatalities however, they are quite rare here. In Australia, where all this is being developed, about 25 % of all attacks are fatal and considering what is doing the attacking the damage and disability with the non-fatal attacks can be severe. Have no clue if this concept works effectively or not myself, it is an interesting approach however.
