Just a little bit on my trip to Roatan, Anthonys Key.

A buddy and I just came back from Roatan and AKR is where we stayed.

First the accomodations. Very rustic to say the least. A small cabin on the key with two double beds, shower, sink and in room safe. While clean and comfy there does come a time when I do miss turning on the TV to watch the news or whatever from the comfort of my bed. At times it got very humid and hot in the room if the breeze was not blowing from the right direction making sleep a little difficult at times. They do have A/C in some of the other cabins but there were none available to upgrade to. If you go this route bring hangers as there are only a few.

The staff. Super friendly and attentaive. Absolutely no issues with the staff at all.

The food. Very good. In fact I was actually shocked by how good the food actually was. Three meals a day. Anything other than iced tea and water was an additional charge. I had probably had the best pea soup that I have ever had there.

The dive operation. Excellent. Fast big boats that were never crowded. 32% for an additional $125 for the week, not bad at all. The fills were always on the hot side so you would consistently wind up with around 2700-2800 psi once you hit the water. Each dive site offered up something a little different. The two wrecks were interesting for sure and there was an abundance of sea life. Everything from octopus on the night dives to sea turtles and plenty of fish species on the reefs. Visibility at most times was good to very good.

Our DM was awesome. For the life of me I cannot remember his name but he was on the "Haydee". He might even be wearing my AKONA wetsuit that I gave him when I left.

Al in all I am glad I experienced AKR. When Ido go back i will give Fantasea Island a go just to be able to compare

And if you do Barefoot Cay, you will think you have died and gone to heaven! LOL

We've stayed there twice and never had a dive or dive master that you couldn't dive your tank. My experience has been that after the dive master determines your level of ability, experience and air consumption rate they give you an appropriate amount of freedom. My wife is a non-diver and on the first trip there I was really concerned I'd get "tethered" to some dive buddy assigned on the boat. Not the case at all, I dove by myself and just kept track of the group and dive master. As long as you're respectful and don't lag way behind, everyone has to wait for you on the boat, or the dive master always has to look for you they let you do your thing.

I have been to AKR and will return for a second time in August. It is worth the cost, if possible, to upgrade to the Key Superior. My wife is a foodie and while she doesn't consider the food excellent, she thought it was at least good. We are returning because of the experience from the first trip. I generally want to watch a little TV before going to sleep I must admit no phone and no TV is no problem. I was ready to go to sleep as soon as I got horizontal and my head hit the pillow. When i was there we were on the Barracuda and there was plenty of room. Alson was the DM and Dean was the Captain. It was a great trip. Glad you enjoyed it too.
