Just booked our first trip to Roatan - April 2-9. Staying at Athonys Key Resort. My wife and I and the couple we got certified with.

Since this is our first trip there, can anyone tell me what we'll expect with regard to: . . . .
boat dives?

shore dives?

shark dives?

meals?

accomodations (staying in one of the Superior Rooms on/over the water)?

service?

pool area?

Thanks for any insight you are able to provide.

Shore Dives--Forget it
Shark Dive- AKA can arrange this for you
meals--great
accomodaions--get the Superior room(air conditioning)--Key is nice, avoids the steps except for meals.
service-first rate
pool area--can almost make you think about taking a day off from diving

Actually, we went snorkeling off a new friend's dock in front of the dolphin tank and I think shore diving may be doable, that is if you don't mind diving sea grass for 500 feet. I snorkeled my brother's dock a few miles east of AKR and there is quite a bit to see in five feet of water.

boat dives?

3 a day, one or possibly 2 night dives during a week. You are on the same boat all week with same DM

shore dives?

Didn't do one but supposedly ( 3 boat dives were enough for me per day) there is a shoredive off of the key.

shark dives?

There is a shark dive available and AKR can arrange it for you. When we were there in January they were going to take an AKR boat out for it but it got cancelled and I didn't get to do the shark dive.
meals?

The meals are good and there is plenty to eat, not gourmet but certainly good and plenty. It is also nice that you are served at your table.
accomodations (staying in one of the Superior Rooms on/over the water)?

We had a key superior room. while nothing fancy they are quite comfortable with the AC.
service?

I can honestly say that the service was excellent. Every single person there was friendly, helpful and ready to make your stay pleasant.
pool area?

Can't say I spent any time around the pool area, too busy diving and eating and diving and sleeping and diving and.........

Thanks for any insight you are able to provide.

We really enjoyed our trip, good luck to you and have fun!!!

We were at AKR the same week this past April. The weather was great, so hopefully you will have the same good fortune. I agree with all the positice comments above. We would definitely return to AKR. Key superior room is the way to go. The pool area is on the key so very convenient after that third dive. Don't miss their happy hours (2 for 1) which rotate throughout the week between the pool bar and the restaurant bar. Be sure to take the water taxi over to Bailey Key to lounge around and check out the dolphins. The trip to the south side for diving at Mary's Place is not to be missed. Also the lunch at Maya Key. Be sure to walk around and see all the animals.
