There have been a few reported here for that island this year.

A 70-year-old man tragically lost his life yesterday afternoon (Monday) after suffering a heart attack shortly after exiting the water following a scuba diving session at Charco del Palo, a popular diving spot on the east coast of Lanzarote.

According to the report from the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), the incident occurred at around 1:50pm, which is when they received an alert and dispatched the relevant resources to the location given.

The alarm was raised through a 1-1-2 emergency call, reporting that the man had collapsed after completing a dive and was in a state of cardiac arrest. Two ambulances as well as officers from the local Haría police and the Guardia Civil, were dispatched to the area.

Paramedics responded quickly and performed both basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive the man, but despite their efforts, they were unable to save his life, and his death was confirmed at the scene.

The police have initiated the necessary investigations into the incident.

Sad to read of events like this and my condolences go out to the family and friends. It's especially sad that it happened as he finished a dive. But a medical event such as a heart attack can happen anytime, anywhere. It's just as likely he would have had it regardless of what he was doing. My dad, for instance, had a heart attack and died at 65 years old while riding in my cousin's boat in calm harbor water just seconds after leaving the dock to go fishing. I'm older now than my dad was when he died but, fortunately, I don't seem to have the heart problems he had (he had his first heart attack at age 48.) I'm always aware of the fact that I am getting older and don't have as much time left as I used to, so try to make as much of life as I can. I see my MD twice a year and, at the insistence of my wife because of my dad, a cardiologist once a year. But if strenuous activity will eventually give me a cardiac event, it will probably be while working around the house rather than diving. Unless I'm heading into a very strong current, I use less energy diving than I do in other activities.

But regardless of what eventually happens to me, c'est la vie. To this point, I've had a good one.
