Hi all!

I'm glad to have found this website. My wife and I took a "Discover SCUBA" dive at the local Dive Shop/Training Facility/Club and we're "hooked" ;)

We've signed up for the PADI Open Water Cert. Course, and will be starting on the classroom and pool dives on July 23. Right now we're still reading the book and watching the video, so I may have some questions before class begins...

I'm from St. Louis MO, and I "found" diving because I got into Saltwater Reef tanks, I currently have a 120 gallon reef tank complete with Bubble Tip Anenome and Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish, along with other fish and corals....

The wife are waiting for the day we can dive on a "real" reef :)

I'm from the "computer world", I work as a Systems Administrator (ya that poor guy that your computer tells you to contact when ANYTHING goes wrong with it) so in the keystrokes of those before me: Hello World!

Welcome to SB, rottielover. I'm a dog lover, too, with 4 at home (Papillons & Australian Shepherd).

I dive around MO, IL, and AK frequently, and also organize a fun-diving group. So email me when you're certified and ready to do some local diving.

If you do make a handful of local dives after you're certified, you will truly enjoy the reefs much more once you get to them. Get comfortable with the diving (not the OW class simple skills, but actual diving) first, then the fun dives will be infinitely more fun.

Hope to see ya in the local lakes,

Hey rottielover,

welcome to the board. Take a look in the Midwest Muck Divers forum. You will find a bunch of dive buddies if you dare dive the midwest muck :D

Welcome to the board!

Thank's all for the warm welcome!

I guess I did forget to mention that I love dog's, and I currently have a Rottweiler. I used to have two, but the "big girl" @ 110 lbs. died of a rare blood disorder @ 6 years old. My "little girl" @ 85 lbs. is now 6. We also have a Severe Macaw parrot (largest of the "mini" macaw's) and of course the fish.

This question may be better suited to the "Mo Muck Divers" forum, but I was curious...
The rivers around here (Missouri River, Mississippi River, Etc.) all have a TON of silt in them, and it looks like you wouldn't be able to see your hand if you put it ON your mask... Do people actually dive in those?

Hence the name muck divers, welcome to SB Rot.
Wait 'til you dive the real thing, it's like one big saltwater aquarium out there.

The major rivers are NOT for recreational diving. In addition to 0 viz, there are treacherous currents and debris both on the bottom and screaming by.

There are some minor rivers (those that are used for canoe float trips) that are worth diving, but the majority of fun diving is done in the SW MO lakes and in various divers' quarries throughout the midwest. Also a number of private lakes that require permission from a property owner to access.

Not unless someone is paying me large quantities of money.

One dive at the juncture of the Missouri and Kaw river was more than enough for me – and that was when I was young.

Welcome!
