I got home last night after 8 great days in Cozumel. I really could have stayed another week! This isn't a proper trip report, just a summary.

I was booked to dive 7 days with Living Underwater, who I usally dive with. Due to last minute cancellations, Jeremy wasn't able to take me for the first 4 days and booked me with Liquid Blue. Since it was my first dive trip alone, and I had some new gear, I was a little aprehensive about the change. That went away as soon as I checked in with LB and met Michaela, Roberto and Jorge. All ended up well. It was a nice group of divers and Jorge took us on 9 great dives (including 3 of us doing a night dive). I would not hesitate to dive with them again. My last 3 days were with Living Underwater, including another great night dive. A few of my favorite dives of the week were Columbia Pinnacles, San Francisco (a sea horse AND an eagle ray on the same dive, another dive had a cool little spotted moray w/ a spotted drum hiding out under the same ledge), Columbia Deep and the night dives on Paradise Reef.

I stayed at Casa del Mar and was not the least bit disappointed. My room would have been a bit tight for two, but for one person it was great. I had a perfect ocean view, everything was clean, AC worked well when I used it, and the shower was hot enough with sufficient water pressure. The ventilation of the bathrooms result in hearing everything going on in other bathroom which is the one oddity. In the room itself though it wasn't a problem. The rooms could use a mini-fridge too. The pool and sun deck area always had chairs available. The hotel offered an AI promo for the same price as the room rate. Seems that they only do their full breakfast buffet when they are booked up with dive groups. Otherwise they have yogurt w/ granola and cereals out, or you can order a hot breakfast off the menu. Lunch and dinner also are off the menu (same menu for both meals) and buffets if they have big groups. I found breakfast and lunch to be good. I did eat dinner at the hotel the night I arrived, my 2 night dive evenings and one other night. The things I had were pretty good. I couldn't see eating off the same menu for a whole week of lunches and dinners. But it was nice to have the option for a few nights, especially getting back from a night dive just before 9pm.

My husband usually takes the photos and/or video, but I did take his old digital and housing that he doesn't care about to give it a try. I just take the camera from him for a few pictures now and then. I didn't want to deal with the strobes and the full set up. I did get a few decent pics ... and had I been able to figure out setting the flash instead of just the pre-flash for ALL my shots I would have more. I can't see myself taking a camera every dive, but seeing that my pics had some potential I'll work on the technical details and definately try it again.

Back to work tomorrow. Ugh.

Sounds like you had a great trip! I'm jealous!

I'm really glad that Coz is bouncing back from Wilma. Gosh, a seahorse and and eagle ray on the same dive?

Can't wait to see the pics!

Glad you had a good trip. Donna told me that she enjoyed diving with you. Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet. Maybe next time. I'm starting my driving adventure down early Friday morning. Working on the few things that I can actually fit in the trunk and practicing my phrases.

Sounds like a good time, wish I had went.

Oh, going in a couple of weeks so still have it ahead of me. :D

Don't forget the most important phrase..."¿Donde el baño?" :D

Are you really driving down to Coz. and putting the Pemex gas in your personal car or is this a troll...or did I misconstrue the post?

If you're really going let me know what dates you'll be there, we may be able to hook up for a few dives or dinner or something.

It was nice to meet Donna. Hopefully one of these days I'll see you on the boat too. ;)

I've been (slowly) learning some Spanish the past year but don't get much chance to use it at home. Just practical stuff and if I can get that down consistently then hopefully I can eventually be somewhat conversational. This trip I was very brave and asked, in Spanish, where the nearest ATM was. And I must have said it right because the directions I was given (and understood them too) got me to the ATM!

Hope all goes well for you on your road adventure. Be careful and stay safe.

I wish I was going (again) in a couple weeks!

Casa del Mar worked out well. But it can be tough to get a taxi at some times of the day since between the Atlantis sub across the street and Puerto Maya up the road, the greedy cabs aren't too keen on giving up their place in the que for a fare to Caleta or to town, especially when you know what the fare really should be.

And for anyone who's been looking for pretty reliable wireless internet, they do have it in the lobby and 6 out of 8 nights it was operational. And there is no charge. They just give you the password to log onto the network.

This was not a troll. We've got a house in Cozumel and we just got tired of paying our friends at the car rental place $25 to $50 a day depending on the size for a vehicle. The car is far from brand new; 1992 Olds Cutlass Ciera. Just put it in the shop last week for a good going over. The AC still runs cold. It uses no oil and still gets 30 miles per gallon. It's small enough that my wife can feel comforable driving it on the island. And it's big enough to pack the trunk full of dive gear for a run to the harbor.

It would make it much nicer when we have friends visiting just to be able to jump in the car and go. Most folks say it will take 4 to 5 days to drive. I've got a floor full of blown up maps. I just couldn't see dropping $15-20,000 on a new car or truck that will get used a little and parked a lot.

I plan on crossing the border at Brownsville on June 10th and maybe Cozumel by the
14th or 15th if all goes well. Visit with my bride for a few days, do a little work on the house and maybe dive a couple of days and then hop a plane back home. She gets to stay till the middle of August. Is there something wrong with this picture?

Jim, your '92 Cutlass will look great driving around the island. Everyone will know you guys as the people with the Cutlass Ciera! You can spot the dive op owners because they have the nicer trucks. Cptn's and fisherman seem to favor motorcycles and the family scooters. Then of course, there are the rental Bugs with those odd little perpetually salt spray stained windsheilds, the jeeps and those squished looking cars (don't know the make and model).

Jim, we'll be arriving on the 18th. PM me your contact number if you would like to do some dives or dinner or something. Firefyter and I are going down for the 8 days 7 nights thing.

I just drove back to the Paris, Texas area from Savannah...I hate driving!

My back still hurts, and the wife didn't do any of the driving. :D

Umm, yeah there is something wrong with this picture...how come the wife gets to stay longer and someone else brings the car down?
