Photographed this little guy a few months ago. I've been calling it a treefish, but I'm thinking this is wrong. Would appreciate any comments...

Thanks!

Monday, EmptyV (Billy) and I were diving from Spectre, off of Santa Cruz. On our second dive we saw one really BIG fish! Our first thought was a Giant Sea Bass, but the colors were "different" than we would have thought. This fish was just at the edge of our visibility (15-20 feet or so), but the color was a light gray or silvery, with a dark trailing edge on the caudal fin and a dark lateral line. Guessing length was 4-5 feet. General proportions were like a giant sea bass. Tried to get closer but it swam away. After the dive, other divers commented that they had seen a pair of them.

The first one - how big and where did you see it? It resembles a saddled blenny. Small - maybe 3-5 inches long?

Thank you riguerin! I will correct the title and notes. Yes, I see these little guys on every dive, all over the rocky bits.

And I also answered the sea bass question...found a photo by Paul Hughes of a "silver" GSB!

riguerin:
It's a Painted Greenling (Oxylebius pictus). You see them all over the rocky reefs here in So Calif.
