I'm confused. Some Dive Rite Transpac owners here have complained of the tank being unstable (rolling). But some owners claim to love their Transpac. How can you love it if the tank is moving around? But how could it be so popular for so many years if it isn't comfortable?

Does anyone use a single tank adapter with it to help with the tank stability?

I've read some people use a backpack with it. What is that? Is that like a plate? Or a carrying case?

I have the DR TransPlate....(bp&w)....but I have never heard of anyone putting a plate on a TP....that would kind of defeat the purpose of its design wouldnt it??? I have heard of a STA being mounted...but thats certainly not a plate.

A couple friends of mine have TPs and they mention some tank movement from time to time.....and according to both of them....if you ever are thinking doubles....go with the TransPlate.

If you are looking in an lds that handles the TPs...I would bet they have a TransPlate as welll and you can see what a plate is. As far as a carrying case.....other than some kind of bag you got me on that one.

And you can go to.... www.diverite.com and see all their gear.

Hmmm...
Must be a rigging issue, or perhaps a sizing one. I've been using a Transpac for about six years now with everything from AL 63's up to double 104's. While I prefer a BP/W for the 104's, I've never had the least bit of trouble with instability of singles or light doubles at all. Zero... none... (the 104's are a little much for it in my opinion, unless they're rigged single or sidemount, and then the TP/104 combo is just dandy)
The only really huge gripe I've ever heard about the Transpac was from a user who had one of the Fastex fasteners disintegrate on her (way back in a cave, I think it was..) But I've never had any problems, nor have any of the others in my "circle" - which includes half a dozen or so Transpac users.

I have had a TP for 4 years and love it. I have not had a rolling problem at all. I use 80, steel 95 and steel 100 with it. My only complaint is both cam buckles broke within 18 months of use. I have two scubapro quick release buckles on it now.

I have a weird experience at Dive Rite dealer shop. In my area (more than 1 hour boundary), there are two authorized dealer shops. Both places don’t have all sized TransPac in stock. Even they don’t carry Transplate at all. One of them is known for the tech oriented LDS, but I was told that all instructors are wearing TransPac, not Transplate so that I didn’t actually see the Transplate there. After reading many posts about Transplate here, it is a weird to me.

My only complaint about the DRTPII is that the tank sits too near my back and I sometimes poke my head with the 1rst stage, other than that, it's a great rig and very cofortable to wear.

That's why I prefer the BP over the soft pack, and the STA gives a little more clearance from the 1rst stage

I have a TP and when I dive singles, I use the single tank adapter...have had no problems with it. After all of the BC's I have dove over the years it still remains my favorite.

Jax - why do you use a single tank adapter with the transpac? I didn't even know it was possible. Which wing(s) are you doing this with? Which STA are you using?

Ditto. My thoughts exactly. Anyone having trouble with movement is probably dealing with a sizing and/or rigging issue. I have not had any problems with mine. Wont dive anything else at this point. No need to.

You can get stabilizer tabs for the TPII that let you mount doubles on it. I don't see any reason they wouldn't work just as well for mounting an STA, but I'm not confidant that doing so would be much more stable than cam straps given that you're still essentially mounting through a piece of flexible material.

I used a TPII happily for quite a while, and never had any stability issues that I can remember. I only switched to a backplate because I prefer the simplicity, versatility, and reduced weight belt load of that system, although I also heard the fastex failure (and subsequent TPII destruction) story and am glad that isn't possible with my new rig... even if it was unlikely before.
