Hi All,
Just wondering... What's a fair price for an annual service of a regulator (non scubapro) and BC? I paid $86.

Thanks,
Chappy

In the greater Atlanta area a regulator annual inspection/service runs from $35 to $45. A BC inspection/service $25 - $35. Personally I think the rates for the BC checks are a bit outrageous.

I would agree. What is really involved in "checking out" the operation of a BC?

Did they replace any parts or have to do any cleaning of the reg? If this was just a check then that looks steep depending on the work they did it might be alright.

I got quoted 12,000 yen to check an Apeks TX-50 in Fukuoka (parts would be more!) - now that's what I call outrageous!! (he paid for reg AND BC)

p.s. I'm now getting the tools and parts to do it myself :eyebrow: .

I have a yen to know what comes to in US dollars . . . ?

A fair price for labor for an annual service on a regulator is $15.00 per stage with parts being extra. Parts kits can run $5.00 to $10.00 per stage, depending on the manufacturer, how they package the parts and what parts they deem neccesary to replace on an annual basis. So the worst case price should be about $75.00 for an annual service for a first, second, and octo assuming no major parts outside the normal realm of annual service are broken or in need of replacement.

I have seen costs as high as $130 however.

We inspect BC's for free if they come in with the regulator for annual service. It normally just involves a careful insection for general wear and condition and a check for proper function and leaks. We normally charge $15.00 for labor and the cost of the parts if any work is needed (it usually isn't).

My girlfriend and I are quite active with our LDS and associated dive club. When It was time for our annual checkout, I didn't ask how much it was going to cost. Petty much just handed over the gear and starting BS'ing about other stuff. My fault, I know. So, It would appear that I did indeed pay fair market price. Just one more scuba related budget item I will need to account for next year.

Thanks,
Chappy

As far as the BC goes, fill your tub, inflate said BC by mouth until it is as tightly inflated as you can get it (by mouth) push it down in the tub and look for bubbles.
Inspect, of course, for abrasions, severe scuffs, fraying around buckles, d-rings, etc.
