Going to the Philippines in mid-November for a week. Planning to take a day or two to drive down to Anilao in Batangas for some easy diving.

Anyone have any recommendations for a nice, easy dive for a new diver (20 dives)? Never been to the Philippines before, so if you can give me some recommendations for locations to dive near Anilao and good dive shops where I can get someone to dive with me and show me around. We also might decide to stay overnight, so any recommendations for places to stay, preferrably with on-site diving, would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to give Matthew Caldwell a email at matfcald@attglobal.net I have dove with him and his partner in Analao quite a few times and they are some very nice people and very qualified divers. If you have a hard time getting ahold of Matthew email me back and I will set things up for you. Th email to the P.I. is sometimes sketchy. You will love the Philippines once you are outside of Manila, I try to get there as much as I can.

I'd have to check my log book for names but I do remember a dive called the Cathedral. It's a dive site with an iron cross on top of some coral. Not sure if it's the same one but I did one dive there that had a statue of hte Virgin Mary in a little cavern. There's an old casino boat wreck there somewhere too. None of those dives are difficult. I dived with SM Resort. If you like Korean food I'd recommend them. If not, find some other place.

if you want to join us on our weekend dive trips let me know. WE dive around Anilao area.

our homebase for diving is around Lifgpo island. specifically Dive and trek house reef and Portulano.

if you are interested. On November 6 there would be an acoustic nite, this is where a band plays , no serious playing just hanging out and relaxing.

Try Balai resort... http://www.balai-resort.com/ It's not ritzy or flashy like the other resorts... but good food... peace and quiet and competent divers.... they have some local DM's on staff to show you around.

Balai is a great resort to choose... it's a little further down the road than the others (it's the 2nd to the last resort on the strip) but worth it... great food, lovely accomodations, amazing lanai to bum sleep away post-dive euphoria... did i mention great food hehehehe

their website is www.balai-resort.com

i did one of my checkouts at the cathedral... what a trip! my DI didn't want us "feeding" the fish (it's a popular fish feeding site) so he taught us this trick of using a handful of sand and letting some out from your hand... the fish fall for it (no one said they were smart)

i really like it when the school runs around you... kinda like standing in the middle of the highway during rush hour hehehehehe

bit of trivia: the guy who planted the iron cross eventually went on to become the president of the country... maybe a sign?

i have some postings at a user-driven site on anilao dive sites... you can check them out at www.divingobsession.com

you can search directly under "philippines" or "anilao"... should be helpful :eyebrow:
