I think that was the First Class bank safe recovered by Peter Gimbel.
It was actually recovered in 1981, but wasn't opened until 1984.

One of the goals from that dive expedition that Peter Gimel was
looking for also was the "main" Purser's safe, which was "rumored" to
have a bag of diamonds in it "worth millions"
Gimbel was one of the first divers to dive her after she sunk.
