We're holding a raffle and silent auction for Hurricane Relief....
A date for your diary if you live in Houston is October 20th.
CHUM (City of Houston Underwater Mariners) will be hosting a book signing by Joe Burnworth, author of No Safe Harbor at Mykonos restaurant on Richmond starting at 7 pm.
Joe Burnworth was an eyewitness to the Wave Dancer Tragedy on October 8, 2001. He happened to be diving off the Belize Aggressor with some of the other members of the Richmond Dive Club. 17 Members of the RDC died that day and Joe had to help with retrieving the bodies strew about from the capsizing. It was the worst accident in the history of the sport of scuba diving and a testament to the deadly danger posed by hurricanes.
Book Signing Event
In addition to this, and to raise funds for Hurricane Relief, we will also be holding a silent auction - we have a number of very cool donations already and expect a good number in addition to those we already have.
Silent Auction
And we will also be raffling an artifact (a bouillon bowl) that was recovered from the First Class Dining Salon of the Andrea Doria by Gary Gentile, the first man to penetrate that area. This is a really nice piece of history and we're hoping to raise a good amount of money from this item.
All proceeds from the event will go to aiding Hurricane victims. Part of the money raised will go to the American Red Cross, and part will go to a small Houston church which is looking after 80 people at present. This way we can make a big impact on a small group of people and hopefully make a real difference.
Andrea Doria Raffle
We held a poker night last night to kick off the fundraising and raised over a $1000 at very short notice (and had a lot of fun doing it!), so we are on our way.
Please PM me if you have any questions or if you want to buy raffle tickets ($10/ticket). We are looking into having a paypal option on our website to do this, so I'll update this thread if that happens.
Cheers!
