I posted this in another section (women's) but thought I might get some pointers from here too. What would be the appropriate amount to tip when on a charter dive trip? There are 5 of us going...

It depends on the trip and the level of service, but I start my thinking at $5 per tank.

Too much is better than not enough. :D

Ten per cent of the dive package on the trip is what I tip. My trips now are ten days to two weeks. That means 21 to 36 dives per trip. Service and the quality of the dives should be your scale. One time in my travels I did not tip. So it's your call. I use Reef Divers as a scale. They are the best. I think I'm having a Brac attack..........

I usually tip 15% - 20% (like in a restaurant), although if the boat crew has done a really outstanding job (taking me someplace really cool, being organized, keeping good track of who's in/out of the water, having ther sh** together, not trying to "adjust" my gear), I've been known to tip 30%-40%.

That's a bit much, but too much is better than not enough. Good man - you make up for some others.

Lots of variables. Is it a liveaboard or are maids and waiters different poeple...?

I've never been on a liveabord. These have all been single-day-trips (2 or 3 dives).

It's really good to hear people tipping for good service, especially if someone has gone out of their way to give better than good service. One of the nicest incidents I had of being tipped was when a young English couple took me out to dinner - we were able to talk about what they liked about the dives we'd done that day, what they were planning to do, etc.

DORSETBOY:
unfortunately, your sarcasm is not.

If everyone just looked at old threads this website would die.

if you add something with interest maybe the forum will survive... and the threads would grow bigger and, maybe one day, the have small baby threads.
