Does anyone know a dive operator in American Samoa? I want to go to dive there badly but can find any dive shops.

This place is on my radar as well! Hope someone responds with recommendations. It's supposed to be pristine, but difficult to GET there.

I understand from colleagues that there are no dive shops. There are dive opportunities, but only if you know a local who will rent you stuff and take you out. I am looking into Independent Samoa.

American Samoa has a dive operator: pagopagomarinecharters.com They focus mainly on sport fishing, but they have at least one divermaster/instructor and they can take you out on some spectacular boat dives. Boat dives will be expensive though, since you will likely be the only customer. They apparently rent tanks and weights for shore diving as well. It's run by a great bunch of Kiwis, highly competent and fun. They even have their own hyperbaric chamber. I've not dived with them, but we have chartered their boats for scientific water sampling purposes numerous times.

There are a couple of dive outfits on Upolu, the main island of independent Samoa, but I know nothing about them. There's a very nice little dive shop—Dive Savaii—on the north coast of Savaii, Samoa's other main island. They've only got a small boat, and their only sites are within a couple of miles of their shop in Fagamalo, but the dives are good, with an interesting wreck and some easy drift dives. It's run by a delightful German couple—Olaf and Tina—who run things with the expected German precision. The Fagamalo-Manase area is very beautiful and very laid back. Very much worth a trip if you're in the region.
