but I am going to cry!!!! For xmas I got an Ikelite UW housing for my Canon Powershot G2 digital camera. I didn't by any strobes (too expensive for now) so I just used the diffuser. I was so excited to use it. I spent the week in Ft. Laud. and dove out of Pampano Beach. First day of diving was a bit rough but over the course of the week we got some good dives in and I got to take some picture. By the end I took about 243 pictures. I downloaded them all to my laptop (which I brought on vacation). I started sorting though some of them. It turns out I acutally took some decent pictures. Although I have had easier times trying to get babies to smile for a picture then to get a fish to stay in frame. Silly fish.

Well a couple of days ago I started going through all of them. I deleted about half and kept some great pictures. (I still have much to learn) Then in the middle of cleaning some up my hard drive on my laptop started clicking and crunching... CRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG NO!!!!!!!!

I lost EVERYTHING. Everything that was stored on my laptop is now gone. Luckly all the "important" stuff was backed up. But any and all of the pictures I have ever taken with my digital cameras both underwater and on land (over the past 2 years) are bye bye. So I think I am going to go sit in the corner and sulk for a bit. I really wanted to post some pics and get some feed back. That and just show some funny pics. Oh well

I am sorry this is a bit long and in the form of a rant. every once in a blue moon I try the drive again and windows will boot. But it crashes before I can get to anything.

I guess I might invest in one of thoes big digital picture holders. Does anybody have one or heard anything about them?

thanks!

I have the Ikelite case with the Canon G1. I have gotten pretty good at taking pictures of the fish that try not to stay in Frame. Got the Case in 2001 1 week before I went to Hawaii for the first time. It was a good trip just spent a lot of time trying to take pictures. Got a lot of fins of fish.

I just got the Ikelite Strobe for it. Now I am learning how to set the camera for that. At least this time I got it 6 months prior to my big vacation.

do you have a cd burner on that PC? if not, try a thumb drive. You can get a 256MB one for around $60. Plugs right into your USB port and acts like a hard drive.

First of all, a reliable backup system is not an option. I'm sure this is very clear to you at about this time.

Second, don't give up on the hard drive yet. It's very likely that the data can be retrieved from it. If you can't do it yourself, and don't have a friend or coworker you can go to, there are plenty of places that will do data recovery for you for a reasonable fee.

Sorry but you've just learned the hard way why you should burn those original pics a CD before you do anything else! As Mandrake says, all may not be lost. Data recovery is possible with Photo Rescue. It's a reasonably priced $29 utility and you can download a demo.

I agree that the HD needs to be looked at. They can do amazing stuff these days (at a price...).

I just bought myself a DVD burner because the 4.7gig cpacity makes backups a LOT easier.

I keep one backup at home and another offsite (in case of TOTAL disaster.). If you want to go this route I can recommend the Plexor PX-708A.

EDIT: Dee, that might be worth a try but if the drive has failed mechanically it is going to need a data recovery specialist to remount the drive platter - not impossible but tricky and expensive.

Grajan...I agree, Photo Rescue isn't going to solve all problems and I didn't mean to imply it did. But it is a good place to start if he's not sure exactly what happened. But, after re-reading his post, I suppose if Windows won't stay booted, there not much use in it, huh? :34:

Don't be discouraged...it is very possible that the issue is something other than the hard drive so your data may be still intact, if not, like the others have said you can recover data from a failed hard drive. Call the manufacturer's tech support team and they will walk you through some things and troubleshoot the issue and/or have you send it in for repair. It is very possible the motherboard is faulty, which is why it boots sporatically then crashes. I would try that since it can't hurt and should be free, then go from there. Good Luck!

Seems like an even better reason than your New Jersey cold for another Florida trip............

I was thinking the same EXACT thing. Except there is a bit of a correction... I am currently going to school in Rochester, New York. For the past few days the average temp has been around 0 degrees F. So yeah, warm weather and good dives would be amazing right now.
