I have to say that this year has been a little bit of a let down as far as average conditions are concerned in south OC. Many dive have been cut short by diminished viz or very heavy surge and it makes the trek to the beach (I live a half hour away) a little nerve racking.
Not the last three days. I have cut out of work early the last few days and have enjoyed some of the best conditions in north and south Laguna in about a year. Monday brought the first sign of things to come with light surf and no surge (and 89 degree temp) at Shaw's cove. Shaw's being known for it's reliability as "one of the safe spots" away from the waves, it is the first choice when I just want to get wet regardless of the conditions. I was surprised at the clarity and made the choice to go again at Fisherman's cove which is usually surgey mcgee throughout the reef but pleasantly calm for a finishing dive.
Tuesday brought sunny skies and even better conditions. Seeing a flat ocean with 15-20 second "sets" of 1-2 foot waves, I decided to try the northern side of Crescent bay out to Seal rock. Great dive with 25-30 ft viz and many playful seals out near the rock. I had such a good time and was bummed I didn't make enough time for another dive here.
BUT TODAY, Oh today my friends was the best non-Catalina dive in the last 30 dives. I decided to head south to Moss Point. Moss is one of the spots that usually gets the brunt of the pacific and has a pretty tricky beach entry when the waves are over 2 feet. I love this spot but sadly have often had to go elsewhere for more favorable conditions.
I can say with certainty that Moss point looks like another Casino point ( minus the depth) when the getting is good. Today I saw kelp reaching 25 feet from the ground and truly abundant fish life. There are so many rocks and reef structures that hid all kinds of stuff that I don't think I went farther than 100 yards out. I saw sheep-head, Mackerel schools, ling Cod, rock fish, halibut, and two massive bat rays that let me get pretty close before bolting.
Perfect day, perfect dives. With no idea of how long this is going to last I would encourage you to take advantage of these other spots before the swell comes in again. I don't think I'm going to work until next Monday
