I've wanted to make up some soft weights but lead shot for shot shells is running $35to $40 per 25 pound bag at most gun shops in the area. However, on Friday I found a posting on northeastshooters.com for lead shot at $1 per pound. See: Northeastshooters.com.

I followed up on the ad and met with Kevin in Norton, MA and purchased 25#s from him yesterday. He conveniently agreed to meet with me at the Dunkin Donuts just off I-495. While the ad was intended for those that want to reload shot shells, the lead will serve my purposes just fine.

Kevin's phone number is 508-692-0288. I believe he told me that he has about 1000 #s of the stuff.

How are you going to make a pouch for the lead? I have some free lead (~4lb) that I want to make into a soft weight to stick in my pocket for dry diving, but I'm stuck on execution. How are going going about making the pouch/with what type of material?
Thanks!

That depends on what type of weights you are looking to make. If you want to make solid square slide on style weights (like for a weight belt) that are supplied one most all charter boats then you can easily melt down the lead and use a weight mold (like SCUBA Divers' 6 pound weight mould/mold - NEW - eBay (item 110479247677 end time Jan-16-10 07:10:06 PST))

I don't know of any sources for pre-made pouches for putting the lead shot in for "soft lead" weights but then again there is a lot I don't know of :).

Seems to me that $40 for 25# of lead shot is a helluva lot cheaper than $8 or $9 for a 2# soft weight at a LDS. All you have to do next is find some fairly coarse material that resists friction to make a bag for the shot and you have a soft weight. I bet a Ben Franklin store could set you on the right course for the material. I'd think a 2# softie could be had for less than $4.00 using this method.

I have a few thousands pounds of Rubber Impregnated Lead sheet that can be cut into stips to wrap around your tanks or use as anckle wieghts or boot wieghts

or you can cut them to fit in a wieght belt or BC

Ill trade you pound for pound for bags of #8 or #9 Chilled Lead Shot

or Ill trade for other stuff too.

Call you local trap or skeet range and check if they sell used shot. They literally dig it up from the range, screen it, then resell to guys who want to cast their own bullets. I think I paid $10 for about 25lbs last time, it might be a bit more expensive now.
