Just looking for the scoops on the different Hamakua/North Hilo dive sites. Heading to Laupahoehoe tomorrow!

We did two dives.

#1 we headed Southernly from boat ramp to a sandy spot at about 90ft. Not much to see. Good viz, but reef was pretty dead. Saw a few 4ft milkfish and the regulars.

#2 we headed Northernly and much better stuff. A very large Day Octopus was right at the beginning. Nearby we found a conger eel surrounded by banded shrimp. Later we found a spot with a bunch of morays and snappers. Lots of critters on this dive! Need to go back because there was a nice wall that went down to about 100ft that we didn't ave bottom time to explore.

I know that commercial aquarium folks have been collecting in this area, hence the decimation towards the north. I wish there was more protected areas!
