It is just two different styles. You could get an O2 and He analyzer and put them in a pelican case and connect them together.

You can get a unit with the helium and oxygen output on one screen with out having to connect two analyzers together.

It also provides a continuous gas analysis without having to capture a sample (eg hands free) after it is tuned on.

Thats new. Must be a lot of $$. It would be a good idea if you did a lot of mixing for yourself and others or had a shop.

Something that's not clear to me... the El Cheapo has the oxygen sensor internally, and the Expedition has it externally?

The sensor for the Expedition is internal.

Ah - I was looking at the "Expedition - X" which has an external sensor. So basically an Expedition is a preassembled sealed El Cheapo. Think I've got it now.

What is the biggest motivation for having your own analyzer? I recently signed up for a Nitrox class. The LDS offered it at a very attractive price along with some other training. I don't know if I will spend enough time using nitrox to justify an analyzer. Is there a fear that the equiptment where you get your fills is faulty?

Ericfine50 is right. Not only is it nice to have your own analyzer to check your tanks again just before the dive but it's a blast building something yourself.

The Expedition is smaller and has a faster sensor and a backlight. It uses a different sensor and has different internals.

Some dive shops are great, some are...less great. In any event, it's nice to be able to test fills in the field - sooner or later the need arises and you'll be able to respond appropriately the first time someone says, "I think that one is 36%..."

It's also a geek thing - build your own little toy to befuddle the world with!
