Alaska Diver Heading South

Hello Florida!!

I am a diver from Alaska. I will be at my folks for Thanksgiving and I am going to drive down to the Keys. I plan on starting Nov 27 in Panama City and working my way down to the Keys. I have to be back in Atlanta on Dec 10. I am looking for dive buddies or any advice from the locals on dive sites, operators or can't miss it dives. I have all my own gear less tanks and weights. I wouldn't mind a little spear fishing or bug hunting. I get into Alabama on Nov 21 and could be in Panama City for a dive before the Big Trip.

If you have never dived the USS Oriskany in penascola, fl. It is a must dive wreck. Also the Grove in Key Largo, fl and the Vandenberg in Key West. fl.

Since you're going to be in Panama City, check out [user]patmygreen[/user] at Panama City Dive Charters.... he runs an excellent operation.

just north of Panama City are Morrison Springs and Vortex Springs. (about an hour north). Both good freshwater springs. They are dove by people here often.

The Destin Jetties, Panama City Jetties (St Andrews park) and Ft Pickens Jetties (Pensacola) are popular spots. all close to Panama City.

very doable.

you're only about a 30-45 minute drive from Vortex, Morrison and Cypress Springs in that area. Only slightly further to the beach for gulf diving.

Check the charter boats schedule in advance..... they tend to slow down as the weather chills off a little and only run if they get enough people.
