Have you all heard the news? Some Al-Qaida bad boys have mentioned that they were training for a "scuba attack". Check out this article:

I wonder if scuba instructors should be keeping an eye open for suspicious characters?

I hope this doesn't mark the beginning of some serious scuba restrictions. We've already lost some good dive sites near ferry landings. How should the scuba communities respond to this sort of thing? How would you feel about having your favorite dive sites become off limits due to terrorist threats?

I think we in the diving community should keep an eye out for anything suspicious just as we would in other circumstances. It would be disappointing to lose access to dive sites due to terrorism threats. Most dive sites that I can think of, at home and from vacation visits, were a decent distance from shore such that they would not be a relevant target.

Actually this has been a concern since immediately after 9/11. I sincerely hope we dont get to questioning every "suspicious character". This was one reason why the
laser pointer thread threw me a curve.

By the way...what constitutes a suspicious character?

awww man...

I had a couple of suspicious looking characters this morning for a course.. One had a mustache, and the other blinked a lot....

maybe I should be more careful who I let into my PADI underwater explosives and demolition course in future..

.

I must admit to being member of the Scuba Attack Force. You can recognise us by our shifty eyes and all black diving gear. Our male team members also have diabolical goatees. ;)

TBH I think we should all certainly keep an eye out for suspicous behaviour (hey man, why are you diving with all that dynamite?), but lets not get too paranoid. Hell, half the guys I dive with look suspicious! And what looks suspicious depends on your level of paranoia.

Lets keep a level head, be safe and have fun diving!

Especially if they are not wearing hard hats.

There is a proper level of caution but how much do you trust what a terrorist suspect tells you?

There is some danger but I don't think it is all that much.

If you want complete safety and security then you are on a fools errand. There is no way to protect against everything all the time.

Life is not safe. In fact it is so unsafe you won't get out of it alive.

listen, terrorism is just a form of guerilla warfare (a particularly effective form of it) and the basis of geurilla warfare is that you use the general populace as camoflage. So, the most suspicious character of all would be the one that is not suspicious looking at all.

So it is working after all. ;)
