Akumal was great

We returned to Akumal for a week of diving with the Akumal dive shop, and the efforts to reduce/eradicate the lion fish are showing in substantial increase in juvenile fish population and fish on the reef as a whole. We did see some lion fish, but over 5 days of diving spotted a total of just six. There are more restrictions on taking lion fish by spear when on scuba than in the past, so ask about them at the shop before you do it. Anyway, weather was great, seas were calm, and vis was uncommonly good. And of course the people athere are great to work with. Thanks Condor, Chino, Marco, Chollo, Esella, and all the rest of you!!

I will be there next week, mostly cave diving but will get to either Akumal Dive Shop or Akumal Dive Center for at least a few dives.

It's a great place and it is great to hear that their efforts to manage the lionfish population are paying off.

Glad you had a great time, we have only been there once (as snorkelers) but it is a magical place!

Did any dive sites stick out to you as particularly excellent?

The best was north from Akumal bay, a site called AK, and then a little farther north, to a site the local Dm cleverly dubbed "North of Ak."
